Sosa goes deep; Rangers fall short
Sammy Sosa hit two homers to reach 594 for his career, but Paul Byrd helped the Indians beat the Texas Rangers, 9-4, yesterday in Cleveland for their fifth straight win.
Sosa's 439-foot drive leading off the sixth inning against Byrd (2-1) made Jacobs Field the 44th major league ballpark in which he has homered. That broke a tie with Ken Griffey Jr. and Fred McGriff for the most in a career.
"It's nice to have that record, but if we had won, I would have enjoyed it more," Sosa said.

Byrd left after yielding a leadoff single in the seventh to Gerald Laird.
The righthander allowed three runs and eight hits, walked one, and struck out three.
Twins 1, Royals 0 -- Mike Redmond hit a run-scoring single in the 11th inning and host Minnesota beat Kansas City to end a four-game losing streak.
Justin Morneau and Jason Tyner had back-to-back singles off Todd Wellemeyer (0-1) with one out in the 11th to put runners on first and second. Redmond, who finished 2 for 5, then hit a line drive to right-center field to bring home Morneau.
Juan Rincon (1-0) pitched a scoreless 11th for Minnesota, which also ended a four-game home losing streak.
The Twins continued to struggle at the plate, but Boof Bonser and four relievers combined to shut down the Royals, who stranded 14 runners.

Angels 11, Devil Rays 3 -- Bartolo Colon struck out 11 and Vladimir Guerrero homered during a five-run first inning, leading host Los Angeles to a rout of Tampa Bay.

Cardinals 7, Reds 5 -- Skip Schumaker collected a career-best three hits and two RBIs, helping host St. Louis rally from an early four-run deficit to beat Cincinnati.
Adam Kennedy's second double of the game snapped a sixth-inning tie for the Cardinals.
Diamondbacks 7, Padres 4 -- Tony Clark had his second two-homer game of the season and Livan Hernandez silenced San Diego after a rocky first inning, lifting host Arizona before the smallest crowd in franchise history (16,792).
Pirates 5, Astros 3 -- Jason Bay's two-run single in the sixth off Wandy Rodriguez gave host Pittsburgh the victory over Houston and its second three-game sweep of the Astros this season.
