It was Trevor Hoffman Night -- and wouldn't you know it, he blew the save.

Hoffman, baseball's career saves leader, disappointed a sellout crowd at Petco Park by giving up four runs in the ninth inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to stun the Padres, 6-5, last night in San Diego.

Nomar Garciaparra's fourth hit, a two-run double, tied the game at 4 with one out, and Russell Martin's two-run double with two outs handed Hoffman his second loss in his last two appearances.

Hoffman was honored before the game for setting the career saves record late last season. Among those on hand for the ceremony was Lee Smith, who owned the old record of 478. Hoffman was trying for career save No. 487.

Phillies 6, Marlins 5 -- Tom Gordon blew his third save in seven tries, but Carlos Ruiz's infield single with the bases loaded in the ninth bailed him out and gave host Philadelphia its sixth win in seven games.

Brett Myers, the Opening Day starter who was sent to the bullpen last week amid speculation he eventually would replace Gordon, pitched two scoreless innings, though he gave up four hits.

The Phillies' Aaron Rowand was 4 for 5 with a homer, extending his career-best hitting streak to 15.

Nationals 4, Mets 3 -- Austin Kearns hit a three-run homer and host Washington finally scored in the first inning in a win over New York.

The Nationals set an NL record by playing 22 games at the start of a season without scoring a first-inning run, but Kearns ended the drought with a shot to left-center off Oliver Perez (2-2). The Nationals entered the game hitting .071 (5 for 70) in first innings.

Rangers 5, Blue Jays 3 -- Sammy Sosa hit his 595th career home run, Mark Teixeira and Brad Wilkerson both had two-run shots, and visiting Texas beat Toronto.

Sosa followed Teixeira's two-run drive in the third with a shot to center against Blue Jays starter Josh Towers. Sosa is bidding to become the fifth player in major league history to hit 600 or more home runs.

Indians 5, Orioles 4 -- Grady Sizemore hit an inside-the-park home run and Jake Westbrook got his first win in five starts, helping host Cleveland to its sixth straight victory and handing Baltimore its fifth consecutive loss.

Westbrook (1-2) won for the first time since signing a three-year, $33 million contract extension April 13. He allowed three runs and six hits over 6 1/3 innings, struck out five, and walked one. Joe Borowski struck out the side in the ninth.

Cubs 5, Cardinals 3 -- In St. Louis, Jason Marquis beat his old team for the second straight time and Felix Pie hit his first career home run to lift Chicago.

Pie and Aramis Ramirez hit two-run homers in the fourth for the Cubs, who have won consecutive games for the first time since April 6-7. Marquis (3-1), who led the NL with 16 losses to go with a 6.02 ERA last year, allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings.

Diamondbacks 3, Giants 2 -- Arizona manager Bob Melvin refused to let Barry Bonds beat him, walking him intentionally three times with runners in scoring position, including in the ninth inning, and the Diamondbacks snapped the Giants' eight-game winning streak.

After Arizona walked Bonds with two outs and a runner at second in the ninth, Jose Valverde retired Ray Durham on a game-ending ground out for his ninth save in 10 chances.

Braves 9, Rockies 7 -- Andruw Jones hit a three-run homer, Edgar Renteria had four singles and two RBIs, and visiting Atlanta scored eight runs with two outs in a win over Colorado.

Devil Rays 4, Athletics 1 -- James Shields (2-0) struck out nine and Carl Crawford and B.J. Upton each hit RBI doubles to help Tampa Bay snap an 11-game losing streak on the West Coast.

Twins 5, Tigers 3 -- Pinch hitter Joe Mauer's two-run single capped a four-run eighth inning, helping visiting Minnesota rally over Detroit.

White Sox 7, Angels 3 -- Jermaine Dye homered twice, leading host Chicago over Los Angeles.

Brewers 4, Astros 1 -- J.J. Hardy's two-run double off Roy Oswalt capped a three-run seventh inning and Chris Capuano improved to 4-0 as visiting Milwaukee handed Houston its seventh consecutive loss.

Mariners 7, Royals 4 -- Horacio Ramirez pitched into the seventh inning, Jose Lopez homered for the second straight game, and host Seattle won its season-high fourth in a row.

Pirates 3, Reds 1 -- Ian Snell held Cincinnati to six hits over seven shutout innings, and Jason Bay's two-run double capped a three-run first for host Pittsburgh.
