Hafner beats shift, Jays

DH taps grounder to left in 11th to boost Cleveland

Travis Hafner dribbled an RBI double down the third-base line, out of the reach of Toronto's overshifted infield, and the Indians beat the Blue Jays, 7-6, in 11 innings last night in Cleveland.

With Toronto playing the Indians' powerful pull hitter to the right side, Hafner stuck out his bat and got enough of a low, outside pitch from Shaun Marcum (1-2) to send a slow roller toward third.

When the ball crept out of the dirt and onto the outfield grass, David Dellucci, who was on first after a bloop single, scored easily to give Cleveland its ninth victory in 10 games.

It wasn't a typical RBI for Hafner, but the Indians will take it on a day when they lost a protest as well as starting pitcher Jake Westbrook, who was forced out in the second inning with tightness in his abdominal muscle.

Earlier, the Indians had their protest denied by Major League Baseball, which ruled the umpires were within their rights to add a run for Baltimore three innings after it was waved off in the Orioles' 7-4 win on Saturday.

Giants 5, Rockies 3 -- Barry Bonds's chances to hit are becoming more limited as he creeps closer to the home run record.

When Jeff Francis hung an off-speed pitch to the slugger, Bonds made him pay with his 743d career home run. Then in the eighth , he lined a bases-loaded, two-run single to right to lift San Francisco past visiting Colorado.

Bonds moved within 12 homers of Hank Aaron's career record of 755, hitting a two-run shot to right field in the fourth inning. His eighth-inning single gave him four RBIs on the night and 1,951 for his career, tying him with Stan Musial for fourth place on the all-time list.

Royals 3, Angels 1 -- Light-hitting Esteban German hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to lead host Kansas City past Los Angeles.

German had only three major league home runs in 441 at-bats before he knocked Ervin Santana's 1-0 pitch over the wall in left for his first homer in 144 at-bats.

Jorge De La Rosa (3-2) went seven innings as the Royals won for just the third time in 10 games and halted the Angels' four-game winning streak.

Devil Rays 4, Twins 3 -- Pinch hitter Dioner Navarro drove in the winning run with a grounder in the 10th inning, and host Tampa Bay rallied past Minnesota.

The Devil Rays tied it with two runs in the ninth off Twins closer Joe Nathan. Elijah Dukes pulled Tampa Bay to within 3-2 with a two-out RBI single before Ty Wigginton's run-scoring single tied it.

Mariners 3, White Sox 2 -- Yuniesky Betancourt hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning and Miguel Batista pitched surging Seattle over visiting Chicago.

Betancourt hit a 1-0 fastball into Seattle's bullpen beyond left field off rookie John Danks, who allowed six hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings but still dropped to 0-4.

Cubs, 8-6, 7-1 -- Alfonso Soriano's hitting and Jason Marquis's pitching helped Chicago get two wins in one day in Pittsburgh.

Marquis limited the Pirates to four hits over eight innings to win his fourth consecutive start, and Soriano homered for the second time in two days after not connecting all season, leading Chicago to a 7-1 victory. Earlier, the Cubs completed an 8-6 win in a game suspended by a persistent rain with Chicago ahead, 6-5, in the middle of the seventh Tuesday night. Soriano led off that game with his first Cubs homer, and Cliff Floyd's two-run shot off Jonah Bayliss (2-2) keyed a four-run rally just before the rain came.

Mets 6, Marlins 3 -- Oliver Perez struck out a season-high 10 and singled twice to start rallies, helping host New York beat Florida and avoid a three-game sweep.

Dodgers 2, Diamondbacks 1 -- Mark Hendrickson allowed three hits over six-plus innings and Juan Pierre singled home a run after an error by rookie center fielder Chris Young, helping host Los Angeles beat Arizona.

Tigers 3, Orioles 2 -- Gary Sheffield went 4 for 4 with a home run and an RBI single and Craig Monroe hit a tiebreaking homer in the sixth inning, helping host Detroit earn its first sweep of the season and handing Baltimore its fourth straight loss.

Braves 4, Phillies 3 -- Chipper Jones kept up his torrid hitting with a two-run double, and the Atlanta bullpen shut down visiting Philadelphia over the final four innings.

Padres 7, Nationals 3 -- Matt Chico couldn't get out of the fourth inning after allowing five runs, and host San Diego downed Washington, even though the Padres lost starter Clay Hensley to a strained groin in the third inning.

Astros 3, Reds 1 -- Roy Oswalt (4-2) pitched eight stellar innings and rookie Hunter Pence got his first career RBI to lead host Houston over Cincinnati.

The game between the Yankees and Rangers in Arlington, Texas, was postponed by rain. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.
