Yankees sinkin' in the rain
Rasner breaks finger in second loss to Mets
Tom Glavine is closing in on 300 wins, while the New York Yankees are falling far behind in the pennant race.
David Wright hit a pair of two-run homers off reliever Mike Myers after Darrell Rasner became the latest Yankees pitcher to get injured, and the Mets held off their fading Big Apple rivals, 10-7, yesterday for their second consecutive victory in the Subway Series.
"It's definitely embarrassing," Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon said. "We definitely know that we are better than we've showed."
Super sub Endy Chavez had four hits on a rainy afternoon at Shea Stadium, one day after delivering the go-ahead homer in a 3-2 win over Andy Pettitte and the Yankees. Staked to an 8-2 lead after Rasner left in the first with a broken index finger, Glavine (5-1) yielded three runs in six-plus innings for his 295th victory.
On his ninth pitch, Rasner (1-3) was struck on his pitching hand by Chavez's comebacker.
The plummeting Yankees (18-23) lost for the seventh time in nine games and matched their low-water mark in a dismal season. At five games below .500, they are right back where they were when owner George Steinbrenner called his team's 9-14 start "clearly not acceptable."
"We're going to turn it around. I wish I could give you a date," manager Joe Torre said. "Until we straighten out what we need to straighten out, we can't worry about the standings."
Twins 5, Brewers 2 -- Scott Baker pitched into the ninth inning in his first major league appearance this season and newly buzzed Minnesota won its 12th straight interleague game, beating host Milwaukee.
Torii Hunter hit a two-run homer as the Twins beat their regional rival for the fifth time in a row. Most Minnesota players got their hair cut before the game by barber Ramon Ortiz in a show of team unity.
Cubs 11, White Sox 6 -- Derrek Lee, who'd missed five games with neck spasms, punctuated a six-run eighth inning with a pinch grand slam to lead another Cubs comeback, sending the White Sox to a staggering 11-6 defeat at Wrigley Field.
Paul Konerko homered leading off the eighth against Bob Howry (1-3) to put the White Sox ahead, 6-5.
Marlins 7, Devil Rays 2 -- Dontrelle Willis allowed two runs in seven innings, Jeremy Hermida and Aaron Boone homered on consecutive pitches in the sixth and Florida beat Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Willis (6-3) stopped a personal two-game losing streak. He gave up five hits, three walks, and struck out seven.
Diamondbacks 9, Pirates 8 -- Carlos Quentin's two-run single in the eighth inning finished off Arizona's franchise record-tying comeback, and the Diamondbacks rallied from six runs down with the help of host Pittsburgh's ineffective bullpen for a victory.
Tony Clark's pinch grand slam in the seventh tied it for Arizona.
Angels 6, Dodgers 2 -- Mike Napoli homered and scored the go-ahead run on a double play, Robb Quinlan drove in two more with a bloop double, and the Angels beat the Dodgers in Anaheim, for their second straight win in the Freeway Series.
Athletics 4, Giants 2 -- Dan Haren allowed three hits over seven dominant innings, and Jack Cust hit a three-run homer in Oakland's second straight victory in the Bay Bridge Series over visiting San Francisco.
Rockies 6, Royals 4 -- Brad Hawpe and Garrett Atkins hit home runs off Gil Meche -- the first earned runs the righthander allowed on the road this season -- as Colorado beat Kansas City in Denver.
Tigers 8, Cardinals 7 -- Ivan Rodriguez's three-run homer in the third inning gave host Detroit a six-run lead, and some strong defensive plays helped the Tigers hold on for a win over St. Louis.
Reds 10, Indians 5 -- Brandon Phillips hit a three-run homer against his former team and extended his hitting streak to 21 games, leading Cincinnati over host Cleveland.
Mariners 7, Padres 4 -- Jose Guillen hit a two-run homer in the first inning and drove in four runs against Greg Maddux, leading host Seattle over San Diego.
Blue Jays 13, Phillies 2 -- Matt Stairs hit a grand slam, Lyle Overbay drove in four runs with a triple and homer, and visiting Toronto beat Philadelphia.
Astros 6, Rangers 1 -- Lance Berkman hit a two-run single after an umpire's missed call in the sixth inning, and host Houston went on to beat Texas.
Orioles 3, Nationals 2 -- Jay Payton's two-run double in the 11th inning gave Baltimore the victory in Washington.![]()
