What is in the cards for top New Englander?

Matt Harvey is 18 years old and still in high school, but there are already autographed baseball cards of him for sale on eBay.

That's because Harvey, a pitcher from Fitch High School in Groton, Conn., is one of the top high school prospects in the nation and a potential first-round pick in Thursday's baseball draft. According to Baseball America, Harvey is the 11th-ranked prospect in the nation and the No. 1 New Englander.

This season, Harvey is 6-1 with a 0.68 earned run average and has 106 strikeouts in 51 innings.

A 6-foot-4-inch, 190-pound righthander, Harvey has already signed a letter of intent to play at the University of North Carolina. His father, Ed, who is also his high school coach, said his son will decide after the draft whether or not to attend school.

"[North Carolina] is hard to pass up, but it's a win-win situation," the elder Harvey said. "He's worked very hard, and he's got the talent."

Harvey's repertoire includes a 95-mile-per-hour fastball, a biting curve, and an 80-m.p.h. changeup with downward action. Harvey's father said the curveball and changeup are what scouts call "plus" pitches.

Another word in scouting lingo is "signability," the likelihood that the player will sign a contract if drafted. It is a huge factor in draft-day decisions.

Harvey's signability could be in question because he has Scott Boras -- a notoriously stubborn negotiator -- as an adviser. Being aligned with Boras could cause Harvey to drop into later rounds, according to Baseball America.

If he is drafted, Harvey could be looking at a contract worth a million dollars or more.

On eBay, one of Harvey's cards is going for $2.49. In a few years, it could be worth a lot more.
