Wang delivers for Yankees
He pitches five-hitter in New York's 5-1 win
Chien-Ming Wang gave the New York Yankees something they hadn't had since last summer: a nine-inning complete game.
Wang pitched a five-hitter, and Alex Rodriguez and Bobby Abreu keyed the Yankees' reviving offense in a 5-1 victory over the host Chicago White Sox last night.
Wang (5-4) struck out four and walked one, throwing 104 pitches in New York's first nine-inning complete game since he beat Tampa Bay with a two-hit shutout last July 28.
Wang won for the fourth time in five starts, throwing the third complete game of his career.
New York (26-31) has won five of seven following its terrible start.
Chicago (26-29) has lost nine of 11 and is fading fast in the AL Central.
Rodriguez, his average back up to .303, hit a two-run single off the left-field wall in a four-run third inning.
Abreu, who has 10 hits in his last 21 at-bats, added an opposite-field, solo homer in the eighth.
Former Yankee Javier Vazquez (3-4) allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings.
Twins 8, Angels 5 -- Nick Punto, Michael Cuddyer, and Jason Bartlett homered and Kevin Slowey (1-0) earned his first major league victory to lift visiting Minnesota over Los Angeles.
Luis Castillo's major league-record errorless streak for second basemen ended at 143 consecutive games.
He missed a throw from Bartlett, the Minnesota shortstop, in the first inning.
Tigers 10, Rangers 0 -- Gary Sheffield homered twice and drove in five runs, leading Justin Verlander and visiting Detroit to a rout of plummeting Texas.
The Rangers have lost 11 of 14, leaving them with the worst record in the major leagues at 21-38.
The Tigers had 14 hits in support of Verlander (6-2), who allowed five hits and struck out six in seven innings.
Devil Rays 6, Blue Jays 2 -- Carl Crawford drove in four runs and Tampa Bay's bullpen bounced back with a scoreless effort at Toronto.
A night after four Tampa Bay relievers gave up six runs in the ninth inning in a 12-11 defeat, they got the job done in ending Toronto's three-game winning streak.
Orioles 9, Mariners 5 -- Jay Gibbons ended an 0-for-22 slide with two hits and started a five-run rally that helped Baltimore beat host Seattle to stop a five-game losing streak.
Daniel Cabrera (5-6) allowed four runs in the first two innings, then held the Mariners to two hits in his final six innings.
Royals 4, Indians 3 -- Newly promoted left fielder Joey Gathright had two hits, a stolen base, sacrifice bunt, and a run scored, helping Brian Bannister (2-3) win his second straight start in Kansas City's victory at Cleveland.
Padres 5, Dodgers 2 -- Trevor Hoffman became the first big leaguer to reach 500 saves in host San Diego's victory over Los Angeles.
The 39-year-old Hoffman pitched a scoreless ninth for his 18th save in 20 chances this season.
Hoffman set the career record with his 479th save last Sept. 28 against Pittsburgh, breaking Lee Smith's old mark of 478.
Geoff Blum drove in four runs to back Greg Maddux's (5-3) sharp pitching, and the win kept the Padres in first place in the NL West.
San Diego has won four straight and nine of 11.
Arizona 1, San Francisco 0 -- Chris Young broke a scoreless tie with a home run to center field leading off the seventh inning, lifting host Arizona a night after his game-ending shot in the 10th.
Phillies 4, Mets 2 -- Jimmy Rollins hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning, rallying visiting Philadelphia.
Cubs 6, Brewers 2 -- Carlos Zambrano (6-5) controlled his temper and his pitches, and Chicago overcame Prince Fielder's 21st home run to beat host Milwaukee.
Cardinals 6, Reds 4 -- Albert Pujols's two-run homer snapped a seventh-inning tie, helping St. Louis over visiting Cincinnati.
Nationals 6, Pirates 5 -- Cristian Guzman scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Salomon Torres and host Washington ended a three-game losing streak with a victory over Pittsburgh.
Rockies 8, Astros 7 -- Brad Hawpe hit a two-run tiebreaking triple in the seventh inning to help host Colorado beat Houston.
Marlins 7, Braves 4 -- Aaron Boone hit a two-run homer, helping Florida win at Atlanta.![]()
