MLB suspends White Sox' Pierzynski

Baseball
Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski was suspended for one game yesterday for his conduct against the New York Yankees Thursday. After striking out in the eighth inning, Pierzynski pounded the plate in disgust with his bat and then said something to home plate umpire Bob Davidson, who ejected him. Pierzynski then flipped his helmet back at the plate. Pierzynski appealed the suspension and was in yesterday's lineup against the Houston Astros, but he said he might sit out today in the finale of the interleague series. Chicago is scheduled to face Houston lefthander Wandy Rodriguez today and Pierzynski would probably have not started the game . . . Tampa Bay catcher Dioner Navarro was released from a hospital after he was hit in the throat by an errant pitch Friday, the team said. A sixth-inning pitch from Brian Stokes landed short of the plate and bounced under Navarro's mask against the Marlins. Navarro was in uniform yesterday but he didn't play . . . Mark Teixeira's franchise-record consecutive games streak ended at 507 when the Texas Rangers placed their first baseman on the 15-day disabled list (strained left quadriceps) before last night's game against Milwaukee . . . Detroit Tigers lefthander Kenny Rogers, who had arterial bypass surgery at the end of March, will make his first rehab start tonight for Toledo. He'll pitch three innings or up to about 50 pitches in his first outing since spring training . . . Marc DesRoches of Somerville pitched a perfect game to lift the Alibrandis over the Brighton Braves, 7-0, in the Yawkey League. Somerville leads the league with a 10-0 record.

In 2001, when Patterson played for the Portland Trail Blazers, he entered a modified guilty plea in Washington state to third-degree attempted rape for allegedly forcing his children's nanny to perform a sex act on him. Ask Queenie, winner in 2005 and 2006, was taken to the head of the pack early by jockey Dyn Panell, who rode the 6-year-old mare to a 4-length victory in the 6-furlong race in 1:11 4/5 . . . Alilability showed off his closing kick to eight other 3-year-old colts and geldings and won the $20,000 final of the Mt. Skipper Series at Rockingham Park in Salem, N.H. The son of Noble Ability, driven by Kyle DiBenedetto, stormed to win by a 1 1/4 lengths in 1:51.1 after trailing Herzon by nearly 4 lengths . . .
