Adam Eaton gave the Phillies the boost they wanted and the bullpen the rest it needed a day after their latest blowout loss.

"Maybe the bullpen kind of appreciated me going out and pitching deeper in the game," Eaton said.

Everyone on the Phillies had to love Eaton's effort.

The righthander pitched four-hit ball for seven innings, and Ryan Howard, Pat Burrell, and Jimmy Rollins homered to lead Philadelphia over the Chicago White Sox, 3-0, last night in Philadelphia.

Eaton (7-4) pitched out of a pair of jams, made a nifty defensive play to help his cause, and won for the fourth time in five starts.

He walked three and struck out five. Mike Zagurski tossed a perfect eighth and Antonio Alfonseca worked a one-hit ninth for his fifth save.

The Phillies sandwiched this shutout and Jon Lieber's gem around a 17-5 loss to Kansas City Sunday. They have lost six games this season when allowing a double-digit run total and have come back to win the next game five times.

"That's baseball. You can always come back and start from scratch," manager Charlie Manuel said.

Burrell hit his eighth homer of the season in the second off Javier Vazquez, and Howard's 13th homer in the fourth went deep into the second deck in right.

Rollins made it three solo shots for the Phillies in the sixth when he hit his 11th homer.

Giants 4, Blue Jays 3 -- Barry Bonds ended his latest home run drought and showed he might be finding his stroke again.

Bonds hit his 747th homer and moved within eight of Hank Aaron's career record with a two-run shot during the host Giants' win, just the second home run since May 8 for the slugger and his first this month.

San Francisco's Matt Morris (7-3) recovered from a shaky start and pitched a seven-hitter for his 23d career complete game and third this season.

Dodgers 5, Mets 3 -- James Loney doubled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning in his second big league game of the season, and host Los Angeles rallied to hand the slumping NL East leaders their seventh loss in eight games.

Randy Wolf (8-4) earned the victory, giving up nine hits and three runs in six shaky innings. Wolf moved into a tie with Philadelphia's Cole Hamels for the most wins in the NL.

Takashi Saito worked the ninth for his 17th save as the Dodgers won for just the second time in seven games.

Cubs 2, Astros 1 -- Carlos Zambrano mixed his pitches instead of his punches and hit his second homer of the season to lead host Chicago.

In his first appearance at Wrigley Field since his June 1 fight with catcher Michael Barrett, Zambrano gave up three hits and an unearned run in eight strong innings. He threw 128 pitches and outdueled hard-luck loser Woody Williams.

"This is a new season for me. When you have great pitches and trust in yourself, you just let the bad things go and start new things," Zambrano said. "That's what I'm doing right now."

Mariners 8, Indians 7 -- Raul Ibanez hit two two-run homers and then doubled in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning to lead visiting Seattle. Jose Vidro started the ninth with a single off Joe Borowski (0-3). Ibanez doubled to right-center with one out for his fifth RBI, leading the Mariners to their fourth straight win.

Ibanez tripled in the seventh, finishing a single shy of the cycle. It was the sixth time he hit two homers in a game, the last coming June 24, 2006, at San Diego.

Trailing, 7-0, the Indians scored three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth, and two in the eighth.
