The Minnesota Twins have postponed today's game against Kansas City following a bridge collapse near the Metrodome and team president Dave St. Peter said their weekend series with Cleveland also could be affected.

The Twins also postponed today's groundbreaking ceremony for the team's new stadium, which will be located downtown.

Twins officials decided to play Wednesday night's game after conferring with department of public safety officials. It was decided that sending 20,000-25,000 people back into traffic could hinder rescue efforts.

Bell stepping down
Buddy Bell resigned as the Kansas City Royals' manager, effective at the end of the season. Bell said he will remain on for the rest of the season. He will join the Royals' front office in 2008 as a senior adviser to general manager Dayton Moore. "I had to make a choice between managing and my family," Bell said, "and to me that's a no-brainer." . . . Jason Giambi, sidelined since May 30 after tearing tissue in his left foot, could be back with the Yankees within a week, leaving manager Joe Torre with an abundance of established players. Johnny Damon, held out of the starting lineup last night against the White Sox, has gotten a lot of time at designated hitter with Giambi out, and Andy Phillips has established himself at first base. New York also acquired infielder Wilson Betemit from the Dodgers Tuesday . . . The Yankees reinstated righthander Jeff Karstens (broken leg) from the disabled list and optioned infielder Chris Basak to their top farm club . . . Sammy Sosa, told by the Rangers in a long, closed-door meeting that his playing time will be cut, said, "I don't have a problem with it." . . . The Braves cleared roster spots for newly acquired relievers Octavio Dotel and Ron Mahay by cutting first baseman Julio Franco and demoting reliever Jose Ascanio . . . Kerry Wood, who last pitched in the majors June 6, 2006, is pitching without shoulder pain and is expected to be activated soon -- probably tomorrow -- by the Cubs . . . The White Sox will skip struggling Jose Contreras's turn in the rotation. Gavin Floyd will start Sunday against Detroit . . . Lefthander Aaron Fultz (strained ribcage muscle) was activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Indians . . . Claiming righthander Anibal Sanchez (shoulder) was injured when demoted to the minors by the Marlins, the Major League Baseball Players Association filed a grievance contending Sanchez should be on the major league disabled list and earn an additional salary of more than $1,400 per day . . . Met Pedro Martínez's first rehab start was rained out in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Martínez, who had rotator cuff surgery Oct. 5, will throw a simulated game of 45 pitches today . . . The Cardinals optioned outfielder Skip Schumaker to Memphis, creating a roster spot for Joel Piñeiro, acquired Tuesday from the Red Sox.
