Reds' Gonzalez may miss start of season
SARASOTA, Fla.—Reds shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who has a compression fracture in his left knee, likely will miss the start of the season.
Manager Dusty Baker said Saturday the injury will keep Gonzalez from any baseball activity for three weeks, at which time team doctor Timothy Kremchek will examine the knee.
If Gonzalez is cleared to play, he would have about 10 days to get ready for the March 31 opener at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
"It would be hard for him to make it back on time, unless a miracle happens," Baker said.
Gonzalez said he's been told to give the knee a rest.
"I'll be on crutches for a week to keep the pressure off," he said. "I won't need surgery."
Baker has the option of moving Brandon Phillips from second base to shortstop, a position he played in the minor leagues. Phillips led National League second basemen in fielding percentage last season, committing only eight errors.
Jeff Keppinger, Paul Janish and Adam Rosales also will get more chances in spring camp.![]()
