CHICAGO (Reuters) - The Chicago Cubs have placed outfielder Alfonso Soriano on the 15-day disabled list because of a right calf strain, the team said on Wednesday.

Soriano sustained the injury against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday while catching Ken Griffey's fly ball in left-center field to end the top of the first inning.

"As he was catching the ball, he goes up after it and he just strained his calf," Cubs manager Lou Piniella told reporters. "It's his unique style."

Soriano is batting .175 with one double, two home runs and five RBIs in 13 games this season.

The Cubs have recalled infielder Eric Patterson from Triple-A Iowa to replace Soriano on the roster.
