Fausto Carmona allowed a run in 6 2/3 innings, Ryan Garko and Travis Hafner hit two-run homers, and the host Cleveland Indians beat the Detroit Tigers, 11-1, last night.
Tigers righthander Justin Verlander remained winless in four starts, falling to 0-3. He allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings, with four walks and one strikeout. The loss snapped the Tigers' season-high three-game winning streak.
Carmona (2-1), who walked eight in 3 1/3 innings in his last start against Oakland, gave up seven hits, struck out two, and walked one.
Jason Michaels drove in three runs while Garko, Hafner, and Jamey Carroll had two RBIs apiece for the Indians, who had lost six of seven. Every Cleveland starter had at least one hit.
The game featured five hit batters - two by Verlander, two in a row by Carmona, and one by Tigers reliever Bobby Seay.
After Verlander hit Garko in the second and Michaels in the fifth, Carmona opened the sixth by hitting Ramon Santiago on the foot. On the next pitch, he hit Gary Sheffield in the hip.
Indians manager Eric Wedge, frustrated with his team's play, held a meeting with the players before the game. For one night, at least, the meeting paid off.
The Indians scored three times in the second on Michaels's sacrifice fly, Casey Blake's double, and Carroll's infield hit.
The Indians broke it open with a five-run sixth off Zach Miner.
Reds 9, Cubs 2 - Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 596th homer, and Joey Votto doubled with the bases loaded, homered, and drove in five runs as visiting Cincinnati ended its five-game losing streak.
With the wind blowing in at Wrigley Field for the first time in the three-game series, Votto delivered the key hits and the Reds' Dusty Baker beat the team he managed from 2003-06. The Cubs won the first two games, 9-5 and 12-3.
Edinson Volquez (2-0) gave up one run and four hits in five innings. Ted Lilly (0-3) allowed five runs and six hits in six innings.
Mets 3, Nationals 2 - Damion Easley scored on Joel Hanrahan's second wild pitch in the bottom of the 14th inning and New York beat Washington on the 44th anniversary of the first game at Shea Stadium.
Easley led off the 14th with a single to left. He advanced to second on a wild pitch with one out and reached third when Hanrahan committed a throwing error trying to pick him off second.
Ryan Church struck out and Hanrahan (0-1) intentionally walked David Wright and Carlos Delgado to load the bases. Hanrahan then bounced the first pitch to pinch hitter Brian Schneider, and Easley raced home with the winning run.
Brewers 5, Cardinals 3 - Prince Fielder hit his first home run of the season, a two-run drive off Brad Thompson (1-1) in the 10th inning, to lift Milwaukee at St. Louis.
Fielder, who led the National League with 50 homers last year, needed 54 at-bats to connect for the first time this year. He tied the score with a bloop RBI double that capped a three-run, eighth-inning rally.
Phillies 10, Astros 2 - Brett Myers (2-1) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings, and Chris Coste had four hits for host Philadelphia.
Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell had consecutive homers for the Phillies, who tied a season high with 16 hits. Chase Utley added a two-run drive.
Carlos Lee and Miguel Tejada hit solo homers for the Astros.
Orioles 6, White Sox 5 - Adam Jones singled in the winning run in the 10th inning, and host Baltimore rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the eighth to split the two-game series.
Nick Markakis homered for the Orioles. George Sherrill (1-0) pitched the 10th for the win.
Carlos Quentin hit two homers for Chicago.
Rangers 4, Blue Jays 1 - Vicente Padilla (2-1) pitched seven strong innings, Ian Kinsler had three hits, and Texas handed Toronto its fifth straight home defeat.
Rangers outfielder David Murphy went 3 for 4 with three doubles.
Rays 7, Twins 3 - Jason Hammel had his second straight strong outing, Nathan Haynes's single keyed a four-run rally, and Tampa Bay beat host Minnesota to split the two-game series.
In six innings, Hammel (1-1) allowed six hits and three runs while striking out five.
Mariners 8, Athletics 1 - Carlos Silva followed Felix Hernandez's complete game a day before with a gem of his own, leading visiting Seattle to its sixth straight win over Oakland.
Silva (3-0) allowed one run and four hits in seven innings, struck out one, and walked two.
Braves 8, Marlins 0 - At Miami, John Smoltz pitched five shutout innings and struck out 10, increasing his career total to 2,996, and Chipper Jones went 4 for 4 with two homers and three RBIs to help Atlanta top Florida.
Angels 5, Royals 3 - Garret Anderson doubled in three runs, Erick Aybar had an RBI double and scored another run on a grounder with the infield in, and host Los Angeles beat Kansas City.![]()
