Vladimir Guerrero homered to highlight a four-run fourth inning and the Los Angeles Angels held off host Detroit, 4-3, last night, ending the Tigers' four-game winning streak.
The Tigers were coming off a three-game sweep of Texas in which they scored 37 runs, but didn't have nearly as much success against Ervin Santana (4-0).
Santana pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs and six hits. Justin Speier escaped jams in the seventh and eighth innings, and Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his 10th save in 11 tries.
"Santana's really good," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland. "He's throwing more strikes than he used to. We had a shot at him, but we just couldn't get that one hit."
Santana and Tigers starter Nate Robertson (0-3) cruised through the first three innings before running into trouble in the fourth.
Chone Figgins led off the Angels' half with a double and Guerrero made it 2-0 with his third home run. Torii Hunter followed with a double and Los Angeles loaded the bases with a single and a walk before Casey Kotchman hit a two-run single.
Curtis Granderson led off the bottom half with his second homer of the season, and Magglio Ordonez hit an RBI single later in the inning.
The Tigers closed to 4-3 in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Miguel Cabrera beat out what would have been an inning-ending double play to drive in a run.
Braves 6, Mets 3 - Jair Jurrjens walked three consecutive batters with the bases loaded in the third inning, then got his first major league hit ahead of Kelly Johnson's tiebreaking, two-run homer to help Atlanta win in New York.
Johnson had four RBIs for the Braves, who sent the Mets to their fifth loss in six games following a five-game winning streak. Jurrjens (3-2) recovered from his wild stretch - he didn't allow another batter to reach and retired his final 10 batters - combining with four relievers on a two-hitter.
Diamondbacks 5, Padres 1 - Randy Johnson (1-1) got his first victory since having back surgery in August, leading Arizona past host San Diego. Johnson, whose last win came June 10 against the Red Sox, held the Padres to one run on three hits while striking out seven in six innings.
The Diamondbacks jumped on Randy Wolf (2-1) for five runs in the third inning, which was highlighted by Mark Reynolds's three-run homer to straightaway center.
Royals 8, Blue Jays 4 - John Buck doubled twice and drove in a pair of runs, helping host Kansas City snap a seven-game losing streak.
Buck's double in a six-run eighth inning scored pinch runner Esteban German with the go-ahead run. Buck also doubled home Ross Gload in the fourth, snapping the Royals' 15-inning scoreless drought.
David DeJesus drove in three runs, including two in the eighth. Billy Butler singled home Jose Guillen with the first run of the inning, in which the Royals sent 11 men to the plate.
Rangers 6, Twins 5 - David Murphy hit a 10th-inning RBI single as host Texas snapped a seven-game losing streak.
Hank Blalock hit a one-out double against pitcher Juan Rincon (2-1). With two outs and the outfield pulled in, Murphy hit a fly ball to the warning track in left-center field. Pinch runner German Duran crossed home plate with the winning run, and Murphy was mobbed on the field by his teammates.
Athletics 4, Mariners 3 - Dana Eveland got his third win and Oakland got just three hits but took advantage of wild starter Miguel Batista to beat host Seattle. Batista (2-3) walked five and threw a wild pitch in one inning of work.
Phillies 6, Pirates 5 - Chris Coste had three hits and three RBIs, and Philadelphia's bullpen pitched more than five innings of effective relief at Pittsburgh.
Astros 3, Cardinals 2 - Carlos Lee's home run capped a three-run, ninth-inning rally off Jason Isringhausen, helping visiting Houston claim its sixth straight victory.
Nationals 5, Cubs 3 - Wil Nieves hit first major league homer, a two-run shot in the ninth inning for host Washington.
Marlins 3, Brewers 0 - Hanley Ramirez raced home on a grounder to short with the infield drawn in to score the game's first run and Florida went on to beat host Milwaukee in 10 innings.
Giants 3, Reds 1 - Jonathan Sanchez (2-1) pitched into the ninth and matched his career high with 10 strikeouts, outdueling Aaron Harang and keeping Ken Griffey Jr. at 597 career home runs in San Francisco's win over visiting Cincinnati.
The game between the White Sox and Orioles in Chicago was postponed because of rain. The teams will play a day-night doubleheader today.![]()
