DETROIT (Reuters) - The Detroit Tigers cut outfielder Jacque Jones and revised their batting order on Monday in a move to sharpen the team's lineup.
Jones, who hit .165 with one homer and five runs batted in this season after being acquired from the Chicago Cubs, was designated for assignment.
Detroit, last in the American League Central Division with a 14-18 record, have 10 days to trade the outfielder, put him on waivers or send him to the minors.
The Tigers called up outfielder Matt Joyce from Triple-A Toledo to replace Jones on the roster. Joyce hit .299 with five homers and 21 RBIs in 28 games this season for Toledo.
Gary Sheffield was moved from the designated hitter spot to play leftfield and was dropped from third to sixth in the lineup for Monday's game against the World Series champion Boston Red Sox.
Sheffield, troubled in the early season by shoulder injuries and hitting just .185 with two homers and five RBIs, told reporters before the game he was more comfortable taking the field than serving strictly as DH, ESPN reported.
Other changes in the lineup have Carlos Guillen batting third and catcher Ivan Rodriguez ninth in the order.
Detroit manager Jim Leyland had Joyce batting seventh in the lineup.
