The lights were on and the sun was going down when Adrian Gonzalez hit a three-run homer with two outs in the 18th inning to give the Padres a 12-9 win over the Cincinnati Reds yesterday in San Diego.
It was the fourth time the Padres played at least 13 innings this season. They played a 22-innning game at home against Colorado on April 17-18, losing, 2-1.
Scott Hairston started the winning rally with a one-out walk off Edinson Volquez (7-2), the second starting pitcher the Reds put on the mound in extra innings. Brian Giles reached on first baseman Joey Votto's two-out throwing error, moving Hairston to third. Gonzalez then hit a full-count pitch over the fence in straightaway center for his 14th homer. The game lasted 5 hours 57 minutes.
Josh Banks (1-0) scattered five hits over six innings for the win.
Greg Maddux had a decent start for the Padres, leaving with a 5-4 lead in the sixth. His chance at his 351st victory disappeared when Cla Meredith gave up Brandon Phillips's two-run homer with one out in the seventh to give the Reds a 6-5 lead.
Rays 5, Orioles 4 - Rookie Evan Longoria drove in the winning run with a double in the ninth inning, and host Tampa Bay completed a three-game sweep of Baltimore and moved back into first in the AL East.
Carlos Pena drew a one-out walk in the ninth off George Sherrill (1-1) and scored on Longoria's double to center. The Orioles have lost five of six, and fell into last place in the AL East at 24-25.
Yankees 6, Mariners 5 - Jose Molina hit a two-out RBI double to cap a four-run eighth inning, and host New York came back to beat Seattle to win its season-best fifth straight game while the Mariners have lost a season-worst six in a row.
New York was down, 5-2, coming into the eighth and had been 0-23 when trailing after seven innings. After Bobby Abreu doubled in a run to make it 5-3, closer J.J. Putz (1-2) came on. Putz walked Alex Rodriguez and struck out Jason Giambi but Hideki Matsui hit a soft grounder to the right of the mound and Putz threw wildly to first, allowing Abreu to score and Rodriguez to move to third. Robinson Cano drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly.
Dodgers 4, Cardinals 3 - Andre Ethier singled home the winning run in the 10th inning and Luis Maza hit his first big league homer, leading host Los Angeles over St. Louis.
Russell Martin drove in two runs and touted prospect Clayton Kershaw pitched six effective innings for the Dodgers in his major league debut, allowing two runs and five hits with seven strikeouts.
Rockies 4, Mets 1 - Seth Smith hit his first major league homer, a three-run shot off John Maine, to back a four-hitter by Aaron Cook (7-3) and host Colorado handed New York its sixth loss in seven games.
Blue Jays 3, Royals 1 - Shannon Stewart drove in the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice and Dustin McGowan (3-4) won for the first time in four starts as host Toronto extended Kansas City's losing streak to a season-high seven games.
Pirates 6, Cubs 5 - Jason Bay beat Chicago with an extra-inning single for the second day in the row, delivering a two-out line drive to left in the 11th after host Pittsburgh tied it when left fielder Alfonso Soriano dropped a fly ball in the ninth.
Marlins sweep, 8-6, 5-4 - Dan Uggla hit a bases-loaded, two-out single in the ninth inning to help host Florida beat San Francisco in the nightcap and sweep a doubleheader.
