The Pittsburgh Pirates became the third NL Central team to bat their pitcher eighth this season, dropping shortstop Jack Wilson to the bottom of the order against the Cincinnati Reds. It was the first time since 1957 that a Pirates pitcher batted someplace other than ninth in the starting lineup, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Manager John Russell decided to let lefthander Paul Maholm, a .179 hitter, bat in the eighth spot against righthander Aaron Harang.

Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera left Detroit's game at Minnesota because of a tight left hip flexor.

The Cardinals' Albert Pujols is 9 for 19 with five RBIs in five games since coming off the disabled list.

Mark Mulder got the last three outs of the Cardinals' victory, making the first relief appearance of his career in his 2008 debut. He missed most of the previous two seasons with a shoulder injury. He allowed two hits with a strikeout.
