Rangers fend off Yankees
Young gets to Rivera for winning single
Michael Young had an RBI single off Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning to help give the Texas Rangers their second straight win over the host New York Yankees, 3-2, last night.
Rivera (2-3) came on in the ninth after the New York bullpen held Texas to one hit in four innings in relief of Joba Chamberlain and proceeded to give up hits to the first two batters he faced.
Ian Kinsler doubled to left, stole third, and scored to give Texas a 3-2 lead on Young's hit through a drawn-in infield, sending the Yankees to their third straight loss.
Frank Francisco (2-2) pitched the eighth for the win. C.J. Wilson walked the leadoff batter in the ninth, but got three outs for his 19th save in 21 chances.
Derek Jeter, who got the night off, was in the on-deck circle when Wilson got the final out.
Chamberlain mightily struggled with his control in his fifth start.
After throwing 114 pitches in 6 2/3 innings to earn his first win as a starter Wednesday in Pittsburgh, he needed 91 pitches just to get through four innings, allowing two runs and five hits. He walked four and struck out six.
White Sox 3, Indians 2 - Alexei Ramirez hit two-out homer to tie the game, then Orlando Cabrera drove in the winning run with a single in the 10th inning as host Chicago won its sixth in a row.
With the White Sox trailing, 2-1, and two outs, Ramirez hit a towering fly off Indians closer Joe Borowski. Cleveland left fielder Ben Francisco went back to the fence like he might have a play, but the ball sailed just over the fence to tie the game.
Pinch hitter DeWayne Wise singled, stole second, and scored on Cabrera's single to center off Borowski (1-3), who blew his fourth save in 10 chances.
Rockies 4, Padres 0 - Aaron Cook tossed a five-hitter for the first shutout of his career, and host Colorado ended an eight-game losing streak.
Cook (11-5) struck out four and needed 79 pitches and 1 hour 58 minutes for his second complete game of the season, eighth of his career.
He faced just three batters over the minimum.
Twins 6, Tigers 4 - Craig Monroe hit a three-run homer and Justin Morneau added three hits to help Minnesota win at Detroit.
Mike Redmond had two RBIs for Minnesota, which has won 12 of its last 14 games.
Mets 7, Cardinals 4 - Tony Armas won his season debut and eighth-place hitter Ramon Castro had two hits and three RBIs as New York won at St. Louis.
David Wright hit his 16th homer and lacked a triple for the cycle in an offense that had 14 hits after mustering six runs while dropping three of the previous four games.
Dodgers 7, Astros 6 - Jeff Kent hit a solo homer off Wesley Wright in the 11th inning and Los Angeles blew a five-run lead, then rallied to beat host Houston.
Chan Ho Park (4-2) got Lance Berkman to fly out to end the ninth, then pitched a scoreless 10th.
Phillies 8, Braves 3 - Shane Victorino hit a home run and drove in four runs as Philadelphia remained unbeaten at Turner Field this season.
Pat Burrell also hit a homer for the Phillies, who improved to 6-1 against the Braves this season. They are 4-0 in Atlanta.
Brewers 8, Diamondbacks 6 - J.J. Hardy homered twice as Milwaukee handed Randy Johnson (4-7) his sixth straight loss.
Joe Dillon also homered for the Brewers, who beat Arizona for the fourth time in five meetings. The NL West leaders dropped to 42-42 and saw their lead over the Dodgers shrink to 2 1/2 games.
Pirates 6, Reds 5 - Jack Wilson hit a tiebreaking triple in the 11th inning to lift Pittsburgh at Cincinnati.
For the second day in a row, Wilson batted at the bottom of the order as part of an experiment - Pittsburgh's starting pitchers batted eighth - and went 3 for 5.
Orioles 7, Royals 5 - Brian Roberts homered, Ramon Hernandez and Adam Jones had two RBIs apiece, and host Baltimore beat Kansas City.
Angels 5, Athletics 3 - Vladimir Guerrero triggered a three-run rally in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single and Garret Anderson hit a two-run homer, helping Los Angeles top Oakland.
Nationals 9, Marlins 6 - Collin Balester won his debut, and Ronnie Belliard hit a grand slam to give Washington a road win.
Mariners 7, Blue Jays 6 - Willie Bloomquist singled home Raul Ibanez with the winning run in the ninth inning as Seattle rallied from a four-run deficit to defeat visiting Toronto.
