Diamondbacks blow 2 leads before winning 7-5 in 11
WASHINGTON—The Arizona Diamondbacks blew a two-run lead in the ninth and a three-run lead in the 10th Thursday night before finally putting away the Washington Nationals with two in the 11th for a wild 7-5 victory.
Stephen Drew hit a one-out RBI double and Chad Tracy added a run-scoring single with two outs -- both off Luis Ayala (1-5) -- for the decisive runs as the Diamondbacks overcame numerous follies to get their record back to .500.
Chad Qualls (2-6) pitched 1 1-3 innings for a victory his teammates won't soon forget.
The Diamondbacks led 2-0 after 8 1/2 innings and 5-2 after 9 1/2. Both times the Nationals had the winning run in scoring position with less than two outs but couldn't finish off the game.
Arizona third baseman Mark Reynolds made two errors in the bottom of the ninth during Washington's game-tying rally, then doubled home what turned out to be a needed insurance run in the 10th.
Diamondbacks All-Star starter Dan Haren struck out a season-high nine, walked two, and allowed just three hits. He departed after two batters reached base to open the ninth, leaving him three outs short of his first career shutout.
Brandon Lyon entered and allowed an opposite-field single by Cristian Guzman to load the bases with none out. Austin Kearns then hit a hard grounder to third, but Reynolds backed up on the second hop and let the ball go past him into left field. Two runs scored to tie the game.
Two outs later, Reynolds misplayed another two-hopper to load the bases. Rookie Roger Bernadina fouled off two pitches with the count full before grounding to second, sending the game to extra innings.
With the score tied 2-2 after nine, Reynolds help compensate for his gaffes when he got one of four consecutive two-out hits off Jon Rauch. Conor Jackson's bunt single was followed by Tracy's double off the left-field wall, Reynolds' double off the right-field wall and Miguel Montero's single to right to make it 5-2.
Tony Pena entered in the bottom of the 10th with the three-run lead and couldn't hold it. Pete Orr opened with a single, and Willie Harris' singled him home with one out. Guzman then singled, and cleanup hitter Kearns -- batting .198 entering the game -- followed with a two-run double off the left-field wall.
Kearns advanced to third on the throw, and Pena was relieved by Qualls, who intentionally walked Dmitri Young to put runners on first and third with one out. With the infield in, Jesus Flores grounded to Reynolds, who cleanly fielded the ball this time and threw to the catcher for the tag on Kearns. Wily Mo Pena grounded out to send the game to the 11th.
Nationals starter Jason Bergmann went seven innings, allowing six hits and two runs.
Notes:@ Had the Nationals not scored in the ninth, the Diamondbacks and Nationals would have become the first teams to play each other in five straight shutout games in 28 years, according to Stats LLC. The Chicago White Sox and Oakland A's accomplished the unusual feat in 1980. ... Another statistical oddity: Through the first 3 1/2 innings, all of the Nationals' non-strikeout outs were groundouts, while all of the Diamondbacks' non-strikeout outs were in the air.![]()
