The New York Mets' beleaguered bullpen blew another one.
Chris Coste hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 13th inning and the Phillies overcame a 7-0 deficit to beat the Mets, 8-7, last night and retake the lead in the NL East.
Fernando Tatis hit a three-run homer and the Mets staked Pedro Martínez to a seven-run cushion. But the Phillies chipped away against Martínez and rallied against a bullpen that has blown 10 leads in the ninth inning, according to Stats LLC.
The Mets have 22 blown saves overall, including seven by injured All-Star closer Billy Wagner. This one might have been the most devastating.
Ryan Howard hit his league-leading 35th homer and Jimmy Rollins was 5 for 7 with a two-run shot for Philadelphia, which moved a half-game ahead of the Mets with its ninth win in 11 games.
Mariners 3, Twins 2 - Jose Lopez drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and Roy Corcoran got his first career save for host Seattle as suddenly grinding Minnesota lost its fourth straight.
Minnesota fell 2 games behind the White Sox in the AL Central, its largest deficit since July 27. The Twins are also 2 1/2 games behind the Red Sox in the AL wild-card race.
The Twins are 2-4 on their 14-game trip.
White Sox 8, Orioles 3 - Gavin Floyd (14-6) pitched eight innings of four-hit ball, Nick Swisher homered, and visiting Chicago handed Baltimore its fifth straight loss.
Orlando Cabrera went 4 for 5 with two RBIs for the first-place White Sox, who have won eight of 10 to move a season-high 20 games over .500 (76-56). Chicago had nine extra-base hits, including a season high-tying seven doubles.
Padres 9, Diamondbacks 2 - Brian Giles and Kevin Kouzmanoff both drove in three runs as host San Diego denied Brandon Webb his 20th victory.
Webb (19-5) lost in his first bid to become the NL's first 20-game winner since 2005 with one of his few bad outings this season, allowing six runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Rockies 7, Giants 2 - Chris Iannetta and Garrett Atkins drove in two runs apiece, Jorge De La Rosa (7-7) pitched six strong innings, and visiting Colorado pulled within six games of first-place Arizona.
Indians 10, Tigers 4 - Cliff Lee (19-2) got his AL-leading 19th win and Ben Francisco hit two home runs as visiting Cleveland won its ninth straight.
Jamey Carroll and Kelly Shoppach hit back-to-back homers for Cleveland.
Rangers 2, Royals 1 - Kevin Millwood pitched his second straight complete game and visiting Texas took advantage of some poor Kansas City defense to score two unearned runs.
Angels 5, Athletics 1 - John Lackey (11-2) came within two outs of his first shutout of the season, and Torii Hunter had three hits to power host Los Angeles.
Nationals 2, Dodgers 1 - Lastings Milledge hit his 13th home run and third baseman Ryan Zimmerman started four double plays as host Washington extended Los Angeles's skid to a five games, matching its season high.
Cubs 14, Pirates 9 - Geovany Soto drove in seven runs as visiting Chicago scored seven times in the eighth inning to win its fourth in a row to move 32 games above .500 for the first time since Sept. 15, 1984.
The Cubs trailed, 8-7, entering the eighth. Craig Hansen (0-2) walked in the tying and go-ahead runs while walking three consecutive batters and Soto hit a bases-loaded double.
Brewers 12, Cardinals 0 - Ben Sheets (12-7) worked six scoreless innings and Ryan Braun was 3 for 5 with a two-run homer to help Milwaukee at St. Louis.
The Brewers moved 4 1/2 games ahead of the Cardinals for the wild-card berth.
Braves 10, Marlins 9 - Yunel Escobar's single capped a four-run ninth inning against Florida closer Kevin Gregg and gave host Atlanta the victory.
Reds 2, Astros 1 - Bronson Arroyo pitched Cincinnati's first complete game of the season and Ryan Hanigan hit a solo homer that would have probably drawn an instant replay review as the Reds won in Houston.![]()
