LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Texas Rangers All-Star Ian Kinsler it to have season-ending surgery to repair a hernia, the team said on its website on Friday.

The 26-year-old second baseman has been on the disabled list since August 18 and will undergo the operation next week.

"If I want to fix this, I have to have surgery," Kinsler told reporters. "If you don't have surgery, there's a chance that it will linger and stick around."

Kinsler had been a bright spot in the Rangers' potent lineup this season with a .319 batting average putting him fourth in the American League heading into Friday. He also has 18 home runs and 71 RBIs.

Texas entered Friday's game with a 69-72 record, putting it well out of the American League post-season race.
