Rays swept by Blue Jays
TORONTO - Matt Garza and David Purcey locked up in another great pitching matchup, but it was Purcey who picked up the win this time.
The rookie lefthander pitched eight shutout innings, helping Toronto complete a three-game sweep with a 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday, extending the Blue Jays' winning streak to eight games.
Jesse Carlson closed it out in the ninth for his second save as Toronto matched its longest winning streak since Apr. 14-22, 1999.
Back on Aug. 27, Garza threw 7 2/3 shutout innings as Tampa Bay beat Purcey, 1-0.
This time around, Garza, who began the game not having allowed a run to Toronto in 24 1/3 innings, gave up just one in seven innings but was still tagged with the loss to drop to 11-9.
AL East-leading Tampa Bay lost for the fifth time in six games heading into a three-game series with the second-place Red Sox, who trail the Rays by 1 1/2 games. The Rays have lost eight straight at Fenway Park.
The Rays have never won a series in 25 tries at Fenway, losing 21 and splitting four.
In the second, Adam Lind doubled, went to third on Lyle Overbay's grounder, and scored on Rod Barajas's sacrifice fly. ![]()
