Yankees manage a split

Xavier Nady hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning and the Yankees rallied to beat the Tampa Bay Rays, 6-5, last night in New York to salvage a split of the daynight doubleheader.

James Shields got the AL East-leading Rays off to a fast start in the opener, tossing eight shutout innings in a 7-1 victory.

The Rays retained a two-game lead over the Red Sox in the division.

Derek Jeter collected three hits in each game and Wilson Betemit hit a solo homer in the nightcap for New York, which opened its final homestand at Yankee Stadium.

Four New York relievers combined to throw 5 1/2 innings after Sidney Ponson struggled in the makeup of Friday night's rainout.

Damaso Marte (1-3) pitched a scoreless seventh, Joba Chamberlain worked the eighth, and Mariano Rivera got three outs for his 34th save in 35 opportunities.

Angels 5, Mariners 2 - Francisco Rodriguez set the major league record with his 58th save - moving past Bobby Thigpen (1990) - to lift host Los Angeles.

Braves, 3-2; Mets, 5-0 - Jonathon Niese (1-0) pitched eight poised innings and David Wright hit the first of three New York homers as the Mets won the nightcap to split a doubleheader with visiting Atlanta.

New York is 2 1/2 games ahead of second-place Philadelphia - three up in the loss column - with 15 to play.

Jeff Francoeur hit a tying single in the eighth of the first game and Atlanta earned its first one-run road win in more than a year.

Phillies 7, Brewers 3 - Cole Hamels (13-9) pitched 6 1/3 sharp innings, Jimmy Rollins homered, and host Philadelphia moved within two games of NL wild-card-leading Milwaukee.

The Phillies can tie Milwaukee for the top spot by sweeping a doubleheader today.

Dodgers 5, Rockies 1 - Clayton Kershaw (4-5) allowed just four singles in six crisp innings and visiting Los Angeles won for the 12th time in 13 games.

The NL West-leading Dodgers will go for the three-game sweep at Coors Field today.

Royals sweep Indians: 8-3, 8-4 - Mark Teahen hit two home runs and Ryan Shealy homered and had a career-high four hits in the second game to lead host Kansas City.

In the first game, Teahen had three hits and Zack Greinke (11-10) pitched six solid innings for the Royals.

Twins sweep Orioles: 12-2, 12-6 - Justin Morneau and Carlos Gomez drove in two runs each during a six-run first inning and Minnesota moved into a first-place tie with Chicago in the AL Central by taking the nightcap of a doubleheader in Baltimore.

In the opener, Denard Span homered twice and drove in four runs, and Gomez had a career-high four RBIs.

Reds 3, Diamondbacks 2 - Former Diamondback Micah Owings doubled in the deciding run in the 10th to give visiting Cincinnati a come-from-behind victory over Arizona, which trails LA by 4 1/2 games in the NL West.

Pirates 7, Cardinals 6 - Brandon Moss doubled with two outs in the 12th to score Adam LaRoche and Craig Hansen (1-3) tossed a scoreless inning to pick up the win as host Pittsburgh rallied from a four-run deficit.

Athletics 7, Rangers 1 - Jack Cust homered and Bobby Crosby hit a three-run double, helping Josh Outman earn his first major league victory to power host Oakland.

Giants 7, Padres 0 - Tim Lincecum (17-3) pitched a four-hitter for his first career shutout as San Francisco routed host San Diego.

Nationals 4, Marlins 2 - Hanley Ramirez and Jorge Cantu each homered to power Florida past visiting Washington.

The White Sox doubleheader with the Tigers in Chicago was rained out. The teams will play a split doubleheader today, but more rain is in the forecast . . . Two of the games postponed by Hurricane Ike between the Cubs and Astros in Houston will be played tonight (7:05) and tomorrow (1:05 p.m.) in Milwaukee.
