Lyon, Tigers agree to $4.25 million deal

Brandon Lyon agreed to a $4.25 million, one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers yesterday. Lyon, who had 26 saves for the Arizona Diamondbacks last season, also played for the Blue Jays and Red Sox, and has 51 career saves. Detroit also agreed to a minor league deal with righthander Scott Williamson - a teammate of Lyon's on the 2003 Sox - who pitched in the minors last season . . . Chase Utley says his rehabilitation from hip surgery Nov. 24 is on schedule, and the Philadelphia second baseman expects to be ready by Opening Day . . . The Oakland Athletics agreed on a $3.9 million, one-year contract with righthander Justin Duchscherer.

Jets keep Schottenheimer for offense
Brian Schottenheimer is sticking around to run the New York Jets' offense despite losing out to Rex Ryan for the head coaching job. Schottenheimer has been the Jets' offensive coordinator the past three seasons. He had a year remaining on his contract and reportedly received an extension, but the team would not comment on the deal . . . Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Jonathan Dekker, who injured his knee in August and spent the season on injured reserve, was arrested in Alexandria, Va., and charged with obstruction of justice. Police responded to a complaint and Dekker was apprehended when he tried to flee after they arrived. They didn't provide details of the complaint. Dekker was released on $1,000 bond . . . Seattle linebacker Leroy Hill was arrested in Atlanta on charges of misdemeanor marijuana possession. Hill was released after posting $1,500 bond . . . Gary Tranquill was officially named offensive coordinator for Boston College, coach Frank Spaziani announced. Tranquill replaces Steve Logan, who resigned after two years on the BC staff . . . West Virginia quarterback Pat White passed for 95 yards and a touchdown to lead the South over the North, 35-18, in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

Miller fourth, Defago wins downhill
Switzerland's Didier Defago won a World Cup downhill race for his second victory in eight days, while Bode Miller tied for fourth in Kitzbuehel, Austria. Defago charged down the famed Streif course in 1 minute 56.09 seconds to beat Michael Walchhofer of Austria by 0.17 seconds. Klaus Kroell of Austria was third. Miller shared fourth place with Didier Cuche of Switzerland . . . Dominique Gisin of Switzerland won her second straight World Cup downhill in Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italy, edging American Lindsey Vonn and Anja Paerson. Gisin clocked 1:16.98 down the shortened Olympia delle Tofane course. Vonn finished 0.15 seconds behind, and Paerson was third, 0.17 back. Leanne Smith of Conway, N.H., was only 0.10 behind Gisin midway through her run, then skied off course and injured her knee . . . Lindsey Jacobellis of Stratton Mountain, Vt., and Nate Holland each won their fifth X Games gold in snowboardcross in Aspen, Colo.

Mosley stuns Margarito for WBA title
Shane Mosley, 37, knocked out Antonio Margarito for the first time in his career in the ninth round in Los Angeles to win the World Boxing Association welterweight title in a stunning upset. Margarito, 30, was coming off an impressive victory over previously unbeaten Miguel Cotto six months ago.

Trick by Kljestan is a treat for US
Sacha Kljestan became the first American in 75 years to score his first three international goals in the same game, leading the US over Sweden, 3-1, in a soccer exhibition in Carson, Calif. . . . The Memphis Grizzlies are expected to introduce Lionel Hollins, who twice served as an interim coach, as their coach at a news conference today. The Grizzlies fired Marc Iavaroni Thursday and Johnny Davis acted as interim coach in Friday's 108-88 loss at New York . . . Philadelphia Phantoms enforcer Garrett Klotz was discharged from the hospital, where he was taken after suffering a seizure following a bloody fight with Kevin Westgarth in Friday's 2-1 AHL victory over Manchester . . . Vladimir Sobotka, Johnny Boychuk and Brad Marchand scored to lift the Providence Bruins over host Springfield Falcons, 3-1 . . . Australia's Allan Davis won the Tour Down Under, finishing in the main pack in the final stage in the event highlighted by seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong's comeback . . . Japan's Yoko Shibui won the Osaka International Women's Marathon, finishing in 2 hours 23 minutes 42 seconds.
