Andy Pettitte pitched into the eighth inning, Robinson Cano hit a two-run homer, and Derek Jeter singled in the go-ahead run in the ninth to lead the Yankees over the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-3, yesterday in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Jeter also doubled in the eighth and scored the tying run on Johnny Damon's double off J.P. Howell. He delivered the tiebreaking run against Troy Percival after a one-out double by Cody Ransom.
New York concluded a nine-game, season-opening trip and returns home for today's debut of the $1.5 billion new Yankee Stadium. CC Sabathia makes his first home start in pinstripes against his former team, the Cleveland Indians.
"It always seems as though the season doesn't really officially start until you have your home opener," Jeter said. "I'm sure it's like that for most teams."
Pettitte, who allowed three runs and six hits in 7 1/3 innings, has been tough on Tampa Bay, going 15-4 in 25 career starts.
Brian Bruney (1-0) struck out the only two batters he faced to get the win. Mariano Rivera worked a perfect ninth for his second save in as many opportunities.
Rangers 19, Orioles 6 - Ian Kinsler went 6 for 6 while hitting for the cycle as Texas routed visiting Baltimore to snap a five-game losing streak.
Kinsler became the fourth player in Rangers history with a cycle, reaching the feat with a triple in the sixth inning. With his RBI double in the eighth, he became only the second Texas player with a six-hit game and then scored his fifth run, matching another team record.
Nelson Cruz had his fifth homer - a grand slam off reliever Radhames Liz that gave the Rangers a 10-3 lead. That accounted for half of the eight unearned runs Texas scored in the fourth, when Kinsler had two singles.
Mariners 11, Angels 3 - Ken Griffey Jr. truly is back. And so is Ichiro Suzuki.
Griffey hit career home run No. 613 and his 400th as a Mariner in his second home game of his return season in Seattle.
Suzuki had two hits in his season debut following his first career stint on the disabled list, including his first grand slam in six years during a seven-run seventh inning, to tie Isao Harimoto's Japanese record with hit No. 3,085.
Griffey's fifth-inning homer off starter Jered Weaver, his first as a Mariner in Seattle in 10 years, broke a 2-2 tie. Then Suzuki, who was out due to a bleeding ulcer, golfed a full-count pitch from Jason Bulger into the right-field bleachers.
Indians 5, Royals 4 - Travis Hafner's second double keyed a three-run seventh inning, and Cleveland picked up its first road win of the year while avoiding a three-game sweep in Kansas City, Mo.
Jensen Lewis issued three straight walks in the bottom of the seventh but still got the victory in relief of Aaron Laffey. Kyle Farnsworth gave up three runs while getting only one out in relief for the Royals.
Blue Jays 12, Twins 2 - Aaron Hill went 4 for 5 with one of Toronto's four home runs in four innings against Minnesota starter Scott Baker as the Blue Jays triumphed in Minneapolis.
Hill and Scott Rolen hit two-run shots against Baker, who came off the disabled list to make a forgettable first start of the season. Vernon Wells and Michael Barrett also went deep.
Dodgers 5, Giants 4 - James Loney drew his second bases-loaded walk with one out in the ninth inning to lift host Los Angeles. The Giants were held to one hit over the first seven innings by 21-year-old left-hander Clayton Kershaw, who struck out 13.
Tigers 9, White Sox 0 - Armando Galarraga threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings and Placido Polanco drove in three runs as host Detroit snapped Chicago's three-game winning streak.
Cardinals 12, Diamondbacks 7 - Ryan Ludwick homered and drove in three runs and visiting St. Louis benefited from eight walks and three Arizona errors in the victory.
Rockies 5, Cubs 2 - Jason Marquis pitched seven solid innings and hit a two-run single off Rich Harden to put Colorado ahead for good in Chicago.
Astros 4, Pirates 1 - Mike Hampton (1-1) pitched six shutout innings to help Houston snap a five-game losing streak with a victory in Pittsburgh.
Marlins 10, Braves 4 - Dan Uggla drove in three runs for the second straight game to help visiting Florida (7-1) get off to its best start since it opened 1997 with eight wins in the first nine games.
Mets 7, Padres 2 - Oliver Perez allowed one run and three hits over six smooth innings to help New York earn its first victory at Citi Field.
Brewers 9, Reds 3 - Mike Cameron hit a pair of home runs as host Milwaukee avoided a series sweep.
