Lacking luster in NY
- |
The Yankees opened baseball's fanciest and priciest ballpark yesterday with a performance that would have embarrassed the stars from their famous pinstriped past.
After an 85-year run in a stadium that produced 26 World Series titles, New York's hitters fizzled and its bullpen came apart on a sunny afternoon in a 10-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians.
Jhonny Peralta broke a seventh-inning tie with a two-run double off Jose Veras (0-1), Grady Sizemore hit a grand slam off Damaso Marte, and Victor Martinez's solo homer capped the nine-run frame.
The Yankees stranded 10 runners in the first five innings. The primary cheers were for Jorge Posada, who hit the first home run in the ballpark, a fifth-inning drive off Indians starter Cliff Lee (1-2) that that landed in Monument Park behind center field.
White Sox 3, Rays 2 - John Danks (1-0) took a shutout into the sixth and Jermaine Dye hit a two-run homer to carry Chicago in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Blue Jays 9, Twins 2 - Roy Halladay (3-0) reared back and stifled Minnesota for seven dominant innings and Kevin Millar hit a grand slam as Toronto breezed at the Metrodome.
Angels 5, Mariners 1 - Joe Saunders allowed three hits in seven innings and Mike Napoli hit a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning as Los Angeles won at Safeco Field.
Dodgers 7, Giants 2 - Rafael Furcal hit a leadoff home run and Los Angeles beat San Francisco at Chavez Ravine for its fifth straight victory.
Marlins 6, Braves 2 - Cody Ross hit a three-run homer as Florida got its first three-game sweep in Atlanta. The Marlins are 8-1 for the first time since 1997.
Padres 6, Mets 5 - Chase Headley had three RBIs in support of Jake Peavy (2-1), and San Diego won the rubber match in the first series at Citi Field.
Cardinals 7, Cubs 4 - Chris Duncan had a homer and three RBIs, and Yadier Molina drove in the go-ahead run to lift St. Louis over host Chicago.
Astros 6, Pirates 3 - Lance Berkman drilled a go-ahead, three-run homer in the sixth, and visiting Houston overcame an early two-run deficit.
Nationals 8, Phillies 2 - Adam Dunn hit one of host Washington's four homers as the Nationals (1-7) avoided setting a club record for most consecutive losses to start a season.![]()
