Posada's disputed homer stands up
- |
Pinch hitter Jorge Posada's drive to right in the seventh inning was ruled a two-run homer via video replay, and the Yankees spoiled former teammate Carl Pavano's return with a 7-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians yesterday in New York.
The home run - one of 20 in the four-game series - that gave the Yankees a split of their first series at the $1.5 billion ballpark required the season's first video replay.
Posada sent a high fly to right off Jensen Lewis (1-2) with one out. Trevor Crowe leaped at the wall, but the ball was deflected by a fan and bounced back into play. Posada slowed his trot between first and second, looking out to right field, before he saw the homer signal from second base umpire Phil Cuzzi. Crowe ran toward the infield indicating a fan interfered. The umpires convened for several minutes then went to the video room before ruling it a home run.
Jonathan Albaladejo (1-0) came on with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh to get the win and Mariano Rivera finished for his fourth save.
Pavano, making his first start against the Yankees since the team declined the option on his $39.95 million contract after four miserable years, retired the first 10 Yankees before Derek Jeter's liner to right-center fell for a double. Pavano gave up a run and four hits in six innings, his best outing for Cleveland.
Giants 2, Diamondbacks 0 - Randy Johnson took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against his former team and host San Francisco held on to beat Arizona.
Johnson, who allowed one hit in seven innings, faced the minimum through six and stranded Augie Ojeda at third base after the shortstop doubled to open the seventh.
The 45-year-old Johnson (1-2) got his 296th career win in his first start against the Diamondbacks, with whom he spent eight seasons. Bob Howry pitched the eighth and Brian Wilson got the last three outs for his second save.
Blue Jays 1, Oakland 0 - Ricky Romero pitched seven sharp innings to help host Toronto beat Oakland.
Romero (2-0) struck out a career-high six, allowed four hits, and walked two, lowering his ERA to 1.71. Scott Downs worked a perfect eighth and B.J. Ryan finished for his second save in three chances.
Reds 4, Astros 2 - Pitcher Micah Owings cracked a pinch-hit, two-run double in the seventh to help visiting Cincinnati rally past Houston.
Owings, now 2 for 3 as a pinch hitter this season, drove in Ramon Hernandez and Alex Gonzalez, giving the Reds the lead.
Braves 11, Pirates 1 - Martin Prado and David Ross hit three-run homers to support Javier Vazquez's six shutout innings and visiting Atlanta finally found its missing offense to end a five-game losing streak.
The Braves hadn't scored in 22 innings and the Pirates hadn't allowed a run in 21 innings, a pair of streaks that ended when Jeff Francoeur's two-run single keyed a three-run first against Zach Duke (2-1).
Brewers 4, Mets 2 - Mike Cameron homered against his former team and Todd Coffey escaped a pair of late jams during an eight-out save, leading visiting Milwaukee past New York.
Jeff Suppan (1-2) bounced back from two poor starts to begin the season, pitching effectively into the seventh inning.
Twins 3, Angels 1 - Glen Perkins pitched through pain in the seventh and scattered four hits over eight innings, guiding host Minnesota to a three-game sweep of Los Angeles.
Bobby Abreu's comebacker bounced off the side of Perkins's left leg, just above the knee, but third baseman Brendan Harris picked it up and threw Abreu out to start the seventh. Perkins quickly doubled over with his hands on his knees but was able to finish the inning.
Phillies 5, Padres 4 - Raul Ibanez hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning off Edwin Moreno to lift host Philadelphia past San Diego.
Dodgers 14, Rockies 2 - Matt Kemp hit a grand slam and a solo homer to help the Dodgers win their first six home games for the first time since the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers started 8-0 at Ebbets Field in Jackie Robinson's rookie year.
Marlins 7, Nationals 4 - Cody Ross hit the tying homer in the eighth inning, then hit a three-run double in the ninth to help visiting Florida win its seventh straight and improve to a major-league best 11-1.
Rangers 6, Royals 5 - Michael Young hit a leadoff homer off Kyle Farnsworth in the ninth, allowing Texas to rally past visiting Kansas City.
Tigers 8, Mariners 2 - Rick Porcello shut down host Seattle for seven innings in just his second major league start, retiring his final 14 batters, and Ramon Santiago had a career-high five RBIs to lead Detroit.
Rain forced postponement of the Cubs-Cardinals game in Chicago. It will be made up July 12 as a day-night doubleheader.![]()
