Shutout ends Marlins' winning streak

Ross Ohlendorf allowed two hits over seven innings during Pittsburgh's third shutout in four games and Nate McLouth drove in four runs as the host Pirates ended Florida's seven-game winning streak with an 8-0 rout last night.

The Marlins began the day a major league-best 11-1 and were coming off three consecutive come-from-behind victories in their final at-bat in Washington. This time, they fell behind, 1-0, in the first inning and never caught up during their first loss in seven road games.

The majors' hottest team ran into one of its most surprising. The Pirates are pitching much better than they did while losing 95 games last season, and it has permitted a team coming off 16 consecutive losing seasons to get off to a modest but encouraging 7-6 start.

Ohlendorf (1-2) won for the first time in eight starts since being traded to the Pirates by the Yankees last season. He was sharp from the start against a team that had scored 16 runs in its previous two games, allowing only singles to leadoff batters Emilio Bonifacio in the first and Hanley Ramirez in the fourth while striking out five and walking one.

Tyler Yates and Jesse Chavez finished the shutout with a scoreless inning each.

The Marlins helped out with three wild pitches, a balk, and six walks.

Andrew Miller (0-1) threw a run-scoring wild pitch in the fourth two batters after Adam LaRoche's leadoff double. LaRoche added a two-run single in the fifth.

Reliever Logan Kensing committed a run-scoring balk in the sixth while giving up four runs over 2 1/3 innings, ending the Florida bullpen's streak of 21 1/3 scoreless innings. McLouth hit a three-run homer off Kensing in the sixth.

After the game, the Marlins placed Miller on the 15-day disabled list with an oblique injury.

Nationals 3, Braves 2 - Jordan Zimmermann won his major league debut for host Washington, giving up just two runs over six innings after waiting out a 2-hour-10-minute rain delay.

Reds 4, Astros 3 - Joey Votto's two-run double in the seventh made a winner of Bronson Arroyo (2-1) and lifted visiting Cincinnati to its third win in four games.

Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 3 - Mark Reynolds and Miguel Montero went deep as host Arizona beat struggling Colorado.

The A's-Yankees game in New York and Padres-Phillies game in Philadelphia were rained out. The game at Yankee Stadium will be made up in July. The Padres and Phillies have yet to reschedule.
