Brian Bannister gave up one hit over seven innings and Jose Guillen hit two homers to lead the host Kansas City Royals over the Toronto Blue Jays, 7-1, last night.

The Blue Jays entered the game leading the majors in runs, batting average, and slugging percentage, but Bannister limited them to Adam Lind's first-inning single. Bannister walked six, including five of the first 14 batters he faced.

"The ball was slipping out of my hand the whole night," Bannister said. "I really struggled getting a consistent release with it. At the same time, it was putting a real crazy spin on the ball."

Bannister (2-0) has allowed one run and five hits in 13 innings in winning his two starts since being recalled April 22 from Triple A Omaha. He retired 13 of the last 14 Blue Jays he faced.

Guillen, who had his 12th multihomer game, homered in the first with Willie Bloomquist aboard, and led off the fifth with his second of the season.

Rays 7, Twins 1 - Jeff Niemann kept Minnesota guessing into the sixth inning and Carlos Pena hit his majors-leading ninth homer, lifting visiting Tampa Bay.

Niemann (2-2) gave up just three hits and one run in 5 2/3 innings and the bullpen didn't allow a run the rest of the way for the defending AL champions, who are off to an identical start as last season (8-12) before they went on a stunning run to the World Series.

Pena hit a two-run homer off the upper deck facing in the seventh and had an RBI triple in the first inning. Former Twin Jason Bartlett also homered.

Mets 7, Marlins 1 - Omir Santos hit the first grand slam in Citi Field history for his first career RBIs, and New York extended Florida's losing streak to seven.

Santos's first-inning drive off Anibal Sanchez (1-2) went about four rows into the left-field seats and was just the sixth home run for the Mets at the pitcher-friendly ballpark, their first in six games since April 17.

Daniel Murphy and David Wright tripled for New York, which has more three-base hits (7) at its new park than homers.

Phillies 13, Nationals 11 - Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez each hit a grand slam, rallying host Philadelphia to a wild win over Washington.

Howard's shot to center off rookie starter Shairon Martis in the fifth inning tied the score at 6.

After the Nationals scored four times in the eighth to go ahead, 11-7, Ibanez capped a six-run surge in the bottom half with a two-out drive to right off Joel Hanrahan (0-1).

Rockies 12, Padres 7 - Dexter Fowler tied a modern-day rookie mark with five stolen bases as host Colorado ran its way past San Diego.

The fleet Fowler gave the Padres fits all night, becoming their first rookie to steal that many bases since Damian Jackson on June 28, 1999. That contest also involved Colorado and San Diego.

In the sixth inning Brad Hawpe was hit in the neck by San Diego catcher Nick Hundley's throw to second. Hawpe was taken off the field in a cart and then to a hospital with a possible concussion.

Astros 4, Reds 1 - Lance Berkman hit his 20th homer at Great American Ball Park, the most by any visiting player, and Hunter Pence hit a tiebreaking double in the ninth inning to lead Houston.

Pence's two-run double off Francisco Cordero (0-1) broke a 1-all tie and sent the Astros to their 10th straight win at Great American Ball Park.

Berkman hit a solo homer in the sixth off Johnny Cueto. The opposite-field shot snapped his 0-for-16 slump and left him with more career homers (46) and RBIs (127) vs. Cincinnati than any other team.

Rangers 6, Orioles 4 - Michael Young homered, David Murphy broke a tie with a two-run single in the sixth inning, and Texas rallied to beat host Baltimore.

Brewers 10, Pirates 5 - Rickie Weeks broke open a tie game in the eighth inning with a run-scoring fielder's choice and had a career-high four RBIs, lifting host Milwaukee to its 13th win in a row over Pittsburgh.

Cardinals 3, Braves 2 - Rick Ankiel drove in two runs to back another strong outing by Joel Pineiro, who equaled the best start of his career, and visiting St. Louis edged Atlanta.

Diamondbacks 7, Cubs 2 - Dan Haren threw a three-hitter and broke open the game with a two-run double as Arizona defeated Chicago in Phoenix.

Giants 5, Dodgers 4 - Host San Francisco scratched out a pair of eighth-inning runs, Rich Aurilia driving in the tying run on a dribbler up the first-base line and Edgar Renteria putting the Giants ahead when he scored on pinch hitter Bengie Molina's slow groundout to third.

The game between the Seattle Mariners and the White Sox in Chicago was postponed because of rain. It will be made up today as part of a doubleheader beginning at 5:05 p.m.
