Deal with Seattle could earn Hill $38m

The Seattle Seahawks and starting outside linebacker Leroy Hill have reached agreement on six-year contract worth a guaranteed $15.5 million. The deal could potentially be worth $38 million, according to a source close to the situation. Hill became a free agent last weekend after the team dropped its franchise tag on him and Hill refused to sign an $8.3 million tender offer. The Seahawks said in a news release last night only that the team and Hill had "agreed to terms to a multiyear deal." The Cleveland Browns signed linebacker Bo Ruud, who was waived by the Patriots Wednesday and released running back Allen Patrick . . . The Denver Broncos' crowded backfield has become a bit clearer with the release of third-year tailback Selvin Young . . . The San Francisco 49ers signed linebacker Marques Harris, who played four seasons with San Diego, to a one-year contract . . . Yale All-America linebacker Bobby Abare, a former All-Scholastic at Acton-Boxboro, has been invited to next week's Kansas City Chiefs' rookie mini-camp.Hockey
Rangers' Tortorella is "embarrassed"
John Tortorella regrets the embarrassment he caused the New York Rangers when he squirted liquid and tossed a plastic water bottle into the crowd during a playoff loss at Washington. "It's a bad mistake by me," Tortorella said. "I regret it. I put the New York Rangers organization in an embarrassing situation." . . . Phoenix Coyotes president Doug Moss denied a report that the NHL has taken control of the cash-strapped club. Glendale city manager Ed Beasley told The Arizona Republic the league is running the team and has promised to reimburse the city for parking fees and security costs at Jobing.com Arena, which is located in Glendale. "The bottom line is the NHL is not in control," Moss said. "It's not running the franchise. To say they've taken control - we're having conversations with the league. [General manager] Donnie Maloney is running the draft. I'm reporting to [owner] Jerry Moyes. It's business as usual." . . . Dmitri Kalinin scored with 56 seconds left in overtime to lift Russia to a 6-5 victory over Sweden to open the second round of the world championships in Bern, Switzerland. Ruslan Salei scored with 25 seconds left in overtime as Belarus beat Norway, 3-2. Nadal, Federer, Djokovic win in Rome
Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic advanced to the Rome Masters quarterfinals with straight-sets wins. Nadal took a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Robin Soderling. Federer avenged last year's quarterfinal loss to Radek Stepanek by beating the 16th-seeded Czech, 6-4, 6-1. Djokovic had a surprisingly easy time with 13th-seeded Tommy Robredo, winning, 6-1, 6-1. Also advancing were No. 5 Juan Martin del Potro, No. 8 Fernando Verdasco, No. 12 Fernando Gonzalez, and two qualifiers - Juan Monaco and Mischa Zverev . . . Top-ranked Dinara Safina and defending champion Jelena Jankovic won in straight sets in Stuttgart, Germany, to remain on course to meet in the Miscellany
IRL suspends Guthries indefinitely
The Indy Racing League suspended driver Sean Guthrie, 21, and his father, car owner Jim Guthrie, for disregarding directions by officials during a Firestone Indy Lights race last week in Kansas. IRL competition vice president Tony Cotman said their actions put "everyone at risk" during a yellow caution period and that the suspensions are for an indefinite period. The driver was cited for failing to follow the direction of officials, failing to slow down under the yellow, and failing to follow the direction of safety personnel after a crash by driver Pablo Donoso during the Kansas Lottery 100 . . . The Los Angeles Dodgers purchased the contract of the veteran righthander Jeff Weaver from Triple A Albuquerque and optioned infielder Blake DeWitt to their Pacific Coast League club . . . Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan, 67, is recovering after right knee replacement surgery . . . The Northeastern University Hall of Fame Class of 2009 will be inducted at NU's Curry Student Center May 21.
