Surgery to end season for LA's Shields

Los Angeles Angels reliever Scot Shields will have season-ending surgery tomorrow, said manager Mike Scioscia. Shields, who was placed on the disabled list May 27 for patellar tendinitis, said rehab wasn't doing the trick and that the pain in his left knee was too much to bear . . . Oakland Athletics third baseman Eric Chavez is scheduled for season-ending back surgery June 23. A's manager Bob Geren said the operation - the second on Chavez's back - could give him a chance to play in 2010 . . . The Chicago Cubs fired hitting coach Gerald Perry after 2 1/2 seasons in an attempt to spark the National League's worst offense . . . The Kansas City Royals placed Coco Crisp on the 15-day DL because of a sore right shoulder. . . Kole Calhoun hit a three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning after a North Carolina error helped Arizona State take the lead, and the Sun Devils won their College World Series opener, 5-2, in Omaha. In the late game, Southern Mississippi reliever Jonathan Johnston walked Brandon Loy on four pitches with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, giving Texas a 7-6 victory.Hockey
Gonchar played through knee injury
Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar played the final two rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs with a partially torn right medial collateral ligament, a major injury that can sideline an athlete for months. Gonchar was hurt during a knee-to-knee hit with Washington star Alex Ovechkin in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. He missed two games, returned for Game 7 of that series, and did not miss another game.Basketball
Cavaliers revive trade talk about Shaq
ESPN reported that renewed talks between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Phoenix Suns about a trade involving Shaquille O'Neal were in the preliminary stages. There were, however, no signs a deal was imminent . . . Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun is out of the hospital, a day after breaking five ribs in a bicycle accident. Calhoun biked at least 16 miles after hitting a pothole and falling during Saturday's annual Jim Calhoun Cancer Challenge Ride. He completed the 50-mile ride but collapsed at the finish line . . . Sancho Lyttle had 20 points to lead the visiting Atlanta Dream past the Connecticut Sun, 67-62 . . . Sylvia Fowles had 12 points to help the host Chicago Sky beat the Seattle Storm, 64-57.Boxing
Injury delays Mayweather's comeback
Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s comeback has been postponed because the boxer suffered a rib injury while training. Golden Boy Promotions said Mayweather's July 18 fight against Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas will be rescheduled . . . Three-time World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis was among 14 inductees into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, N.Y.Miscellany
