Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder and Dodgers pitcher Guillermo Mota have been fined for their run-in this week, but Major League Baseball will not suspend them. The amounts of the fines were not disclosed. Mota hit Fielder in the ninth inning of a 17-4 win Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium, presumably as payback for Milwaukee’s Chris Smith grazing Manny Ramirez two innings earlier. After the game, Fielder charged across a hallway to the Dodgers’ clubhouse but was restrained by teammates and security.Martinez could upset Phillies’ rotation
Even though it’s uncertain when Pedro Martinez will join the Philadelphia Phillies, the speculation about the NL East-leading Phillies’ rotation has started. J.A. Happ isn’t going back to the bullpen to make room for Martinez, said general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. Happ tossed a four-hitter against the Rockies and struck out 10 for his second career shutout Wednesday night to go 8-2 with a 2.74 ERA. The Diamondbacks placed All-Star right fielder Justin Upton on the 15-day disabled list with a right oblique strain sustained when he pulled up attempting to steal against the Pirates Wednesday night. In obvious pain and holding his side, he was taken out of the game . . . Outfielder Edgardo Baez and shortstop Ofilio Castro of the Nationals’ Double A Eastern League team were suspended 50 games after testing positive for an amphetamine . . . Hardy sets record in 50m breaststroke
Jessica Hardy broke the world record in the 50-meter breaststroke when she time-trialed the 100-meter breaststroke at the US Open National Championships in Federal Way, Wash. Hardy split a time of 29.95 seconds to beat the previous mark of 30.09 set by Yuliya Efimova of Russia at the world championships last Sunday. Hardy made her return Wednesday after a one-year ban because of a failed drug test. She finished second in the 100-meter freestyle. She is also scheduled to swim in the 100 breaststroke today and the 50 free tomorrow.COLLEGES
NCAA eschews sports-betting states
The NCAA will no longer hold championship tournaments in states that allow betting on single games. Chancellors and presidents from all three NCAA divisions approved the measure, saying it applies to “any session of an NCAA championship.’’ The move came one day after a federal judge denied a request by professional sports leagues and the NCAA to halt Delaware’s planned sports betting lottery until a legal challenge is resolved.NHL

The Red Wings signed free agent forward Jason Williams to a one-year contract. He played last season with the Thrashers and Blue Jackets . . . The Blues named two-time Vezina Trophy winner Ed Belfour as a goaltending consultant . . . Court Judge Redfield T. Baum ruled that all bids for the financially ailing Coyotes, those to keep the team in Arizona or to move it elsewhere, would be accepted for the Sept. 10 auction.
