Evan Longoria broke a 3-3 tie with a 411-foot solo homer and Carlos Pena added a two-run shot in Tampa Bay’s 10-4 win over the Mariners last night in Seattle.
It was the Rays’ sixth victory in eight games, moving them within 1 1/2 games of the Red Sox in the AL wild-card chase.
Longoria’s 24th homer came in the fifth inning and gave Tampa Bay a 4-3 lead. Two batters later, Pena connected off reliever Chris Jakubauskas for his 28th homer of the season. Tampa Bay then cushioned its lead with four runs in the eighth, highlighted by Jason Barlett’s two-run single.
James Shields (7-8) wasn’t near as sharp as his last outing when he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. But the Rays’ righty lasted into the sixth and helped Tampa Bay rebound from Friday night’s stunning 7-6 loss in 11 innings.
Angels 3, Rangers 2 - Jered Weaver pitched into the eighth inning for the first time in his last 10 starts and matched a career high with his second straight 11-strikeout performance, leading Los Angeles past Texas in Anaheim, Calif.
Vladimir Guerrero and Erick Aybar homered for the Angels, who moved 4 1/2 games up on Texas in the AL West.
Blue Jays 3, Orioles 2 - Adam Lind hit a one-out double in the 10th inning to score the winning run as host Toronto snapped a three-game losing streak.
Joe Inglett led off the inning with a single off Danys Baez (4-6), and after he was forced out at second on a bunt by Marco Scutaro, Aaron Hill singled just beyond the outstretched glove of second baseman Ty Wigginton. Lind followed with a double off the wall in left.
Twins 11, Tigers 0 - Minnesota got just what it needed from Carl Pavano and the usual from Denard Span and Joe Mauer.
Pavano (10-8) allowed only five hits over seven innings in his debut, Span went 5 for 5 and Mauer homered and drove in three runs to lift the visiting Twins.
Cardinals 5, Pirates 3 - Albert Pujols hit a three-run double to reach the 100-RBI mark for the ninth consecutive season and Adam Wainwright (13-7) limited Pittsburgh to one run over 6 2/3 innings as visiting St. Louis triumphed.
Pujols missed a chance to possibly break open the game when he grounded into a double play in the fifth with two on and none out. He made up for it an inning later with a bases-loaded double down the left-field line that made it 5-0.
Brewers 12, Astros 5 - Prince Fielder and Mike Rivera drove in three runs apiece and visiting Milwaukee beat up Houston’s bullpen.
Fielder hit his 27th home run, Ryan Braun had a two-run single and Casey McGehee, Bill Hall and Felipe Lopez added RBIs for the Brewers, who finished with 14 hits.
After Houston starter Mike Hampton (7-9) left after two innings with a sprained right knee, the Astros’ bullpen gave up nine runs the rest of the way.
Cubs 6, Rockies 5 - Kosuke Fukudome and Derrek Lee homered as visiting Chicago beat Jason Marquis and Colorado.
The win allowed the Cubs to remain a game behind the Cardinals in the NL Central.
White Sox 8, Indians 5 - Jim Thome hit a two-run shot for his 562d career homer and Gordon Beckham had a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the sixth, helping host Chicago rally past Cleveland.
Giants 4, Reds 2 - Bengie Molina had three hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs and Barry Zito (8-10) pitched six strong innings, helping host San Francisco defeat Cincinnati.
Nationals 5, Diamondbacks 2 - Garrett Mock (1-4) pitched six innings for his first win of the season, Josh Willingham hit a two-run homer and host Washington won its seventh straight.
Royals 12, Athletics 6 - Zack Greinke earned his first win over an AL club since May 26, Mike Jacobs and Billy Butler each drove in three runs and host Kansas City defeated Oakland.
Marlins 6, Phillies 4 - Cody Ross hit a go-ahead two-run homer off Cole Hamels in the sixth inning for visiting Florida.
Padres 3, Mets 1 - Rookie Mat Latos threw six strong innings to win his fourth consecutive start and lead host San Diego past New York.
Braves 2, Dodgers 1 - Kelly Johnson’s two-run homer in the 10th spurred Atlanta past host Los Angeles.![]()
