Jed Hoyer was once co-general manager of the Boston Red Sox for 44 days after Theo Epstein walked away from the job. Now Hoyer has a GM gig of his own. The San Diego Padres hired Hoyer as their general manager, a person with knowledge of the situation said yesterday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the formal announcement won’t be until tomorrow. Hoyer, 35, who was in Boston’s front office when the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004 and 2007, is due in San Diego today. He emerged as a favorite after Padres CEO Jeff Moorad fired Kevin Towers during the last weekend of the regular season . . . New York Mets minor league pitcher Rafael Castro died Friday of an apparent heart attack at the Mets’ academy in Carabobo, Venezuela. He was 18.

Blues’ Oshie undergoes appendectomy
St. Louis Blues forward T.J. Oshie had an appendectomy yesterday morning, hours after playing in a 3-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild. He is expected to miss about two weeks . . . Bill “The Big Whistle’’ Chadwick, the first US-born official in NHL history who was later a popular broadcaster for the New York Rangers, died in Cutchogue, N.Y. He was 94.

Injured Soderling out of Stockholm
Top seed Robin Soderling withdrew from the Stockholm Open because of an elbow injury, allowing Marcos Baghdatis to advance to the final against Olivier Rochus. Rochus outlasted Tomaz Bellucci, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3, to reach today’s final. Soderling has been bothered by a sore right elbow since July . . . Francesca Schiavone and Olga Govortsova advanced to the final of the Kremlin Cup with straight-set victories in Moscow. Schiavone defeated Alona Bondarenko, 6-4, 6-0. Govortsova ousted Alisa Kleybanova, 6-2, 6-1. In the men’s semifinal, Janko Tipsarevic defeated qualifier Illya Marchenko, 6-1, 6-4. He will play Mikhail Youzhny, who beat qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin, 6-2, 6-1 . . . Timea Bacsinszky defeated fifth-seeded Yanina Wickmayer, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, to make the finals of the Luxembourg Open. She will play Sabine Lisicki, who rallied to defeat Shahar Peer, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Hedrick beats Davis with record 1,500
Chad Hedrick got back at rival Shani Davis, setting a track record to win the 1,500 meters at the US speedskating trials in Milwaukee. After losing to Davis by .02 seconds in the 5,000, Hedrick won the shorter event in 1 minute 44.47 seconds. He beat Davis’s record at the Pettit National Ice Center by .01 seconds. Davis took second in 1:44.49. Three-time Olympian Jennifer Rodriguez won the 1,500 in 1:58.45 . . . Zach Lund and John Daly are expected to join Eric Bernotas on the men’s US World Cup skeleton team, while Rebecca Sorensen tentatively qualified behind Noelle Pikus-Pace and Katie Uhlaender for the women’s squad . . . Tanja Poutiainen of Finland won the opening race of the ski season in Soelden, Austria, edging Kathrin Zettel of Austria by .01 seconds in the giant slalom, clocking a two-run combined time of 2:24.96. Two-time defending overall World Cup champion Lindsey Vonn placed ninth.

Cochran, Bean lead AT&T second round
Russ Cochran birdied three straight holes before a bogey on the 18th dropped him into a tie for the lead with Andy Bean at 8-under-par 134 after the second round of the AT&T Championship in San Antonio. Cochran, a first-round co-leader of the Champions Tour event, shot a 3-under 68. Bean birdied the 15th and 16th holes before he parred out for 67 . . . Nicholas Thompson gained five shots in quick fashion with a double eagle and a hole-in-one to storm into contention at the PGA Frys.com Open in Scottsdale, Ariz. Thompson, using a 3-wood, sank his shot from 261 yards on the par-5, 562-yard 11th hole. After a par on No. 12, Thompson’s tee shot with a 7-iron went in on the par-3, 199-yard 13th. Thompson is at 11 under, five shots in back of Troy Matteson, who carded his second straight 61. Matteson’s 122 score in consecutive rounds set a PGA Tour record and gave him a three-shot lead over Webb Simpson (64), Tim Clark (65), and Chris Stroud (65) . . . Michael Jonzon of Sweden shot a 6-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead at 16-under 197 after the third round of the Castello Masters in Castellon, Spain.
