The Cleveland Indians hired Manny Acta to be the franchise’s 40th manager yesterday, giving him the job about three months after he was fired by the Washington Nationals. Acta signed a three-year contract with a club option for 2013. The Indians chose Acta over former Mets manager Bobby Valentine and Indians Triple A manager Torey Lovullo. Acta, who went 158-252 in 2 1/2 years with the Nationals, also interviewed for Houston’s opening and Astros general manager Ed Wade said that they offered him the job Saturday . . . Tony La Russa has agreed to return for a 15th season as Cardinals manager, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported, and he might bring Mark McGwire with him as batting coach. The newspaper said hitting coach Hal McRae had been notified last week that his contract wouldn’t be renewed.College football
Bradford to have surgery, leave for NFL
Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford will have season-ending shoulder surgery this week and expects to enter the NFL draft in April. The Oklahoma quarterback injured his right throwing shoulder twice this season, most recently against Texas Oct. 10. “I dreamed about coming to Oklahoma my whole life,’’ Bradford said. “That’s the reason I came back for this season. And I came back to play, not sit on the bench.’’ . . . Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen called for disciplinary action against the Southeastern Conference replay official who worked the Bulldogs’ 29-19 loss to Florida after a Gators touchdown that might have been a fumble was not overturned. “I hope he’s severely punished if he ever works another SEC game again, because I think it’s completely unacceptable,’’ Mullen said. Cuche, Ligety lead way in Cup opener
Didier Cuche of Switzerland and Ted Ligety of the United States finished 1-2 in the opening men’s World Cup race in Soelden, Austria, a giant slalom on the Rettenbach glacier skipped by US star Bode Miller, the overall World Cup champ in 2005 and 2008. Miller plans to begin his season when the circuit resumes with men’s and women’s slaloms Nov. 14-15 in Levi, Finland . . . Chad Hedrick claimed another spot at the US speedskating trials after making a surprise appearance in the 1,000 meters. After skipping the first round of the 1,000 Thursday, he ended up fourth, joining Shani Davis, Nick Pearson, Trevor Mariscano, and Jonathan Kuck on the World Cup team. Davis announced he’ll consider being part of team pursuit at the Olympics. Davis didn’t skate the pursuit in Turin and feuded over the decision with Hedrick.Golf
Blackmar surges to Champions win
Phil Blackmar won his first Champions Tour title, birdieing five of his first six holes en route to a 7-under-par 64 and a one-stroke victory over Jay Haas, Tom Kite, and Andy Bean in the AT&T Championship in San Antonio . . . Troy Matteson birdied the second playoff hole to beat Jamie Lovemark and Rickie Fowler in the Frys.com Open in Scottsdale, Ariz. . . . Matt Every won the season-ending Nationwide Tour Championship in Charleston, S.C., to earn a 2010 PGA Tour card with a 10th-place finish on the money list, closing with a 5-under 67 for a three-stroke victory over Michael Sim. Also earning cards were Kevin Johnson of Pembroke (13th) and Fran Quinn of Northborough (25th). Kirwa, Kenyans dominate in Frankfurt
Gilbert Kirwa shattered the course record in leading a Kenyan sweep at the Frankfurt Marathon. Kirwa finished in 2 hours 6 minutes 14 seconds to beat Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot’s 2008 course record by 1:07. Cheruiyot finished second (2:06:23) and William Kiplagat third (2:07:05). Agnes Kiprop of Kenya won the women’s race in 2:26:57 . . .
