After he was released by the Red Sox in 2005, Montalbano made a comeback with the minor-league Worcester Tornadoes. He dominated on the mound, but his cancer soon came back. He left, but his teammates paid tribute to him for the rest of the 2006 season. Team Montalbano, which included friends, family and former teammates from other teams, raised $15,000 for cancer research at the 2006 Jimmy Fund Walk.
