Allison has court date for drug charge
GREENSBORO, N.C. --A former Florida Marlins first-round draft pick is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 28 on charges of heroin possession and possessing a stolen vehicle.
A hearing that had been scheduled Thursday for Jeff Allison was postponed in Guilford County's drug court. Allison, 22, was arrested in October on charges that carry a possible four-year maximum sentence, but lawyers have discussed allowing jail time to be waived if he completes rehabilitation for drug addiction.
The right-handed pitcher from Peabody, Mass., was the 16th player selected in the 2003 draft. He has missed two of the past three seasons and acknowledges drug addiction.
He started 18 games in 2005 for the Greensboro Grasshoppers of the Class A South Atlantic League.
