Tim Bogar: The Red Sox bench coach was the odds-on favorite to be named interim manager if Valentine didn't survive the final weeks of the season. But the holdover from the Terry Francona regime would be considered a dark horse candidate to take the helm in 2013. As a player, Bogar was traded by Valentine’s Mets in 1997, and was bitter about it at the time. Bogar denied that was the cause of reported friction between the two this season — “Come on, that was years ago,” Bogar told the Globe in August — but he acknowledged that their relationship has been rocky. Bogar interviewed for the Astros managerial opening but did not get the job.
