Red Sox close to deal with Jonny Gomes

The Boston Red Sox are moving closer to a deal with former Oakland A’s outfielder Jonny Gomes.

Boston Globe national baseball reporter Nick Cafardo is reporting that the Baltimore Orioles have pulled out of the hunt for Gomes’ services. A major league source told Cafardo Boston is putting the finishing touches on a deal with the free agent.

According to ESPN’s Joe McDonald, the two sides are closing in, pending a physical examination.

The Comcast Sports Net’s Sean McAdam was the first to report on the potential interest from the Red Sox.

As the Boston Dirt Dogs blog reported, Gomes is infamous among Boston fans for his 2008 on-field altercation with then Sox outfielder Coco Crisp while Gomes was with the Rays.

Gomes, who turns 32 Thursday, has played 10 seasons in the majors and is a career .244 hitter with 136 home runs and 411 RBIs.
