Victor Martinez, the Tigers’ designated hitter in 2013, missed all of 2012 with a knee injury. He may also play catcher during interleague games, a position he played for much of his career.
In July of 2009, Martinez was traded from the Cleveland Indians to the Red Sox. He played in 183 games over two seasons with the Red Sox, batting .336 in 2009 and .302 in 2010.
Martinez became a free agent in November of 2010 and agreed to a four-year, $50 million contract with Detroit later that month.
