Chasing a foul pop in the fifth inning of Tuesday night’s 6-1 loss to the Twins at Fenway Park, Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrookscrashed back-first into the wall in foul territory near the Minnesota dugout, sliding to make the catch.
Catcher David Ross was chasing the ball, too, folding up at the last minute when he realized he was about to run into Middlebrooks. They plowed into each other, but Middlebrooks hung on.
Ross has a left quad contusion. It’s still not clear what is causing the pain on Middlebrooks’s right side.
Earlier in the day, reliever Joel Hanrahan (right forearm tightness) went on the disabled list.
