When manager John Farrell came face to face with plate umpire Jeff Nelson in the eighth inning Tuesday night at Fenway Park to argue a play, the Red Sox’ frustrations had boiled over.
Hits had been scarce. Costly errors were mounting, turning a pitchers’ duel into a Twins runaway.
No break seemed to go the Sox’ way.
The Twins were on their way to a four-run inning fueled by Sox miscues. Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, and Trevor Plouffe all ripped RBI hits, and a blown-up double play on a ball hit by Ryan Doumit, which Farrell was arguing about, allowed another run to score.
The Twins won, 6-1, the Sox dropping four of their last five.
Scott Diamond threw seven shutout innings at the Sox.
