David Ortiz, already the all-time leader for hits by a designated hitter, reached another milestone Wednesday night, doubling to center field in the sixth inning against the Tigers for his 2,000th hit.
It was his second hit of the game — he later homered in the seventh, his 26th of the season — and he was showered with a lengthy ovation at Fenway Park.
Ortiz, 37, is the seventh player in franchise history in the 2,000th hit club. Carl Yastrzemski is the team’s all-time leader with 3,419 hits.
Ortiz, who is in his 17th season, played his first six years with the Minnesota Twins.
