Season recap: Mark Melancon had a resurgent 2013 season, proving to be a shutdown reliever for the Pirates and a capable closer for the time that Jason Grilli was on the disabled list. He posted an ERA of 1.39 with 70 strikeouts in 71 innings pitched and was named to the NL All-Star team.
Red Sox ties: Melancon was acquired by Boston prior to the 2012 season from Houston in exchange for Jed Lowrie. Hoping he would be a solid setup man for closer Andrew Bailey, Melancon never panned out for the Red Sox, pitching in 41 games with a dismal 6.20 ERA, eventually being sent down to the minors to work on his mechanics and mindset. He was later traded to Pittsburgh in December 2012 in a deal that brought Joel Hanrahan and Brock Holt to Boston.
