Seven months ago, Stephen Drew suffered a concussion in spring training that spoiled his debut with the Red Sox and cleared the way for Jose Iglesias to emerge as a Rookie of the Year candidate. But Drew has overcome the concussion and the challengers for his job, putting himself in position to compete for a championship and land a lucrative contract after his one-year deal with the Sox expires this fall.
Drew is in the final weeks of a $9.5 million deal. After a strong finish — he batted .253 with 13 home runs and 67 RBIs during the regular season while playing well defensively — he is expected to draw several multiyear contract offers this fall, with the Sox among his suitors.
