Despite Stephen Drew’s offensive struggles and the anemic postseason batting average of .094 he carried into Game 6 of the ALCS, manager John Farrell was adamant that he wanted the Red Sox shortstop in the lineup for his defensive prowess.
As if his over-the-shoulder catch in Game 1 wasn’t enough confirmation, Drew left no doubt Saturday night that his defense alone was enough to keep him on the field.
With two outs and runners on first and second base in the top of the seventh inning, the Tigers were in position to build on their one-run lead. Miguel Cabrera hit a sharp grounder up the middle and Drew made a diving stop, skipped to his feet and threw Detroit’s ailing slugger out at first with plenty of time to spare.
