July 27 – An otherwise routine Saturday night game in Baltimore turned into a demonstration of telephone resilience as David Ortiz went batty in the dugout after striking out in the seventh inning of Boston’s 7-3. Ortiz swung away at the dugout phone in anger, destroying his bat and the phone’s plastic cover in the dugout. Dustin Pedroia luckily just missed being clubbed by Ortiz’s fury. Earlier in the at-bat, umpire Tim Tmmons called a strike on a high 3-0 pitch after Ortiz thought he had a walk. Ortiz wasn’t suspended but was fined $5,000. The dugout phone was unharmed. The Next day Jonny Gomes played with a can attached to a string leading to the dugout phone.
