hey, i'm here,,,mild login problem, ready to go

Gordon - Randy Johnson CANNOT be satisfied playing out his days for a loser down there in Arizona. Is Theo preparing a package to re-unite RJ with Curt if he becomes available?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:09PM
Drew, depends how hungry Johnson is to win again. D-Backs have lost franchise-record 10 in a row, but he lives in Arizona year-round and at this stage may not want to go anywhere. D-Backs would extract a high price for him, that's for sure. And it really is an open question whether he'd want to be reunited with Curt Schilling

In your opinion, what would Joe Torre do with Kevin Millar?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:12PM
I don't know, take him out for chicken? Giambi is in a big slump, and Torre is still playing him. Tony Clark hit less than a buck and a half in June and he's still getting some playing time. I mean, Torre would do what Francona will do if Millar doesn't get hot, and that's to take playing time away from him, regardless of what he might have said. Burks and Mueller are both on rehab assignment and presumably getting close, so that will impact how often Millar plays

Hey Gordo, is tonight the pivotal game of the series given that Wakefield always gives them fits and the Yankees are starting either Halsey or some other scrub on Thursday?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:14PM
You've heard the rhetoric...Steinbrenner told George King of the NY Post, "It's payback time.' Yanks would love nothing more than to inflict a body blow on the Sox division chances, and sure, today's game could set the tone for the series. The Siox would appear to have a huge edge Thursday (Martinez vs Halsey), but remember the reverse-lock theory. The games that look to be a lock often go the other way

Seeing Nomar could be gone this off season, what's the odds of Theo moving him before the trade deadline?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)

02:16PM
I think it's still a longshot that Nomar could go before then, unless, of course, the Sox go into a real downward spiral between now and July 31, which I just don't see happening. I still think keeping nomar gives them their best chance of winning in October
Nomor
02:18PM
Why not give Williamson a shot at starting?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:18PM
Way too valuable in the pen, and he hasn't been stretched out at all this season, so that's not going to happen
Big Dog
02:18PM
Yee yah Gordo, any news on the Nomar trade front that's not fit to print? If not, how about fit for the Internet? (Gordo watch out for the trolls from Bos Sports Media Watch -- listed user names now as Dirt Dog, Dirt Photog, etc. you ran DirtDogSaladTosser last time :-)
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:19PM
The talk I'm hearing, even on background, is that it won't happen, Dog. But again, that may depend on whether this team picks it up in the next three weeks

02:20PM
Gordon, if (when) the Yankees sweep is the division race officially over?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:23PM
Close to it, if history is any judge. Since the wild-card was instituted, only one team has led by more than five games at the break and not gone on to win the division. And Alan Schwarz of Baseball America did a study a couple of years ago showing the statistical probability of making the playoffs if you're down by fiuve games at the trading deadline as extremely difficult. Wild card could end up--again--as Sox only option, though tenuous health of Yankee rotation does give some hope

02:24PM
Who is most to blame for this team falling flat on its face?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:26PM
That's a toiugh one. First of all, oit's debatable whether a team on a pace to win 93-plus games has fallen on its face. The injuries have been significant. I think Theo's read on the situation is accurate, when he says it's been a lack of efficiency. The numbers suggest the Sox should be playing much better than they are. This team needs to go on an extended hot streak to restore everyone's faith. I still think the components are all there to be a factor in October, whether they catch the Bombers or not
Fat Paul from Watert...
02:27PM
Gordon, has any team ever come back from a 9 game deficit on July 1st? Because you'd never know it from the media in this town.
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:29PM
Fat Paul, we, of course, are all conditioned by the great collapse of '78, and also the 8 1/2-game lead over the Orioles that turned into an 8-game deficit before it was over. Two out of three here would go a long way toward restoring some public confidence in this bunch

02:32PM
Any chance we can get a refund on Millar or has the warranty expired ? Cowboy Down !!!
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:34PM
I've said it before...I thin k MKillar's biggest problem is that he's been overex[posed. The idea was never for him to be an everyday guy, but injuries forced himself into that role. He's become something of a scapegoat, and while he admittedly hasn't been productive, I'm surprised that so many people are inclined to lay at his feet any problems the Sox are havinbg right now. He can still make a meaningful contribution as a complementary piece, though if Burks is healthy, he'll eat into Millar's time

02:34PM
Why is Francona getting all the heat and not Theo (Kim, Millar, Mendoza) Epstein?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:35PM
The way you frame the question, it's almost as if we're supposed to forget that Theo is also the guy who got Schilling, Foulke, Ortiz, Mueller, and Pokey. That's why he's not catching thatr much heat
Bob Bolin
02:36PM
Didn't the Sox collapse to the Orioles happen in '74?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:37PM
Bob, it was '74. I didn't say otherwise. I referred to the Yankees overtaking the Sox in '78, didn't mention a date in reference to the Orioles., But thanks for providing one
bosoxfan
02:37PM
Hi Gordon, Now that Beltran and Garcia are off the trade market, who do you see the BoSox pursuing to help shore up the team? I've heard they're inquiring about a first baseman, but aren't we happy with Ortiz (with McCarty as a defensive replacement)? I still think they need a quality starter (better than say, Suppan last year). Any views about this? Also, how long until Millar *has* to sit down and let someone else (heck, ANYONE else) play? He's about as automatic an out as they come, and yes, I realize Crespo is still on the team! Lastly, is it just me or did anyone else hear people making fun of the Yankees earlier this year because A-Rod is a better shortstop than Jeter, but is playing 3B ("the best shortstop in NY is playing third"). I don't care what the experts say -- Pokey is a better SS than Nomar. Is there a double standard here? Thanks for your answers -- I look forward to your columns in the Globe.
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:38PM
Bosoxfan, I don't think abyone in Boston would argue that Nomar is a better shortstop than Pokey, but Reese has played oyther positions, Nomar hasn't---you can'yt ask Nomar to switch at this point.
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:40PM
The Sox want to add a bat, first and foremost; the position is almost secondary. If Burks can convince people he's healthy, they may not feel the need is as pressing, though Burks' health is so uncertain, even a good couple of weeks might not be enough to convince anybody.

02:41PM
Hey Gord, what are the chances of us actually landing Delgado?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:43PM
Can't see that one. Too much dough, and they already have a productive left-handed hitting DH/1B type in Ortiz. If anyone from the Jays might end up here, my guess is it could be someone like catalonotto, though he just went on the DL

02:45PM
I have read some rumors that if the Mets fall out of contention in the NL East, Glavine wouldn't mind being traded to the Red Sox. Do you think this is a real possibility?
south of the border
02:45PM
Gordo, what's the latest on BK..Is his fastball back in the 90's. And do the Red Sox even want him back or will they try to showcase him for a possible trade? Thanks.
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:47PM
Glavine has been an attractive fantasy for some time. Hard for me to see the Mets giving him up, especially since he's pitching really well, and there isn't a dominant team in that division, so they'll be on the fringes of that race for awhile. He'd be a beautiful fit here, but ain't gonna happen
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:48PM
BK supposedly threw pretty well the other day in a rehab assignment in Pawtucket, but the velocity was more in the 88-90 range. I think the Sox will try to deal him, though why anyone would pick up that dough at this time, until he shows he can pitch again, is the problem

02:49PM
I've looked up to you for years. I wanted you to know that. Now my question: whatever happened to Yankee phenom Brien Taylor?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:50PM
Brien taylor got in a bar fight involving his brother, hurt hjis shoulder and was never the same, Don't know what he's doing, for all I know, he's delivering papers for the Washington Post
Phil from the left c...
02:51PM
I will be going to Atlanta for the Sox-Braves series. How can I find out where Sox fans will be congregating there?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:53PM
Phil, I would think you're likely to find lots of Sox fans in Buckhead. How 'bout John Harvard's Brew House? That might be a good place to start. There's also a big sports bar near Georgia Tech;s campus in Midtown, around 10th street, if I'm remembering correctly., Downtown there was a late-night joint called Fitzgerald's but I don't know if tyhat's still open

02:54PM
Gordon, enjoy your work. What are your thoughts on Steve Finley? He seems like he would be a nice addition with his bat and glove, but would he be considered superfluous b/c of Damon?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:55PM
i'd keep an eye on Finley. He's going somewhere--maybe Philly--and certainly makes some sense here on the short term.
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
02:55PM
Sorry to cut this short, but I have to go to the Stadium. Seats in the pressbox will be at a premium., Thanks everyone!
