Hamm says trade is ‘for the best’

EAST HARTFORD -- Mia Hamm did not have much to say about husband Nomar Garciaparra changing uniforms after Hamm led the United States soccer team past China, 3-1, in its final tuneup before heading to Athens for the Olympic Games.

Hamm did say she is going to miss sitting in Fenway Park, where she watched Garciaparra patrol the infield and swing for the fences.

"We are going to miss Boston terribly," said Hamm. "We have a lot of great memories there. It was our first home."

She holds no bitterness toward the Red Sox, who traded Garciaparra to the Chicago Cubs Saturday. "It's the nature of the business," Hamm said. "It's something you have to expect to happen some time in your career. It will all be for the best."
