Tom Caron chat wrap -- Oct. 6, 2004

Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:31PM
Hi everyone. Hope you managed to get out of work early yesterday to watch the game... and that you've made plans to go in late tomorrow after a few hours of sleep tonight. Let's chat!
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:34PM
Someone just sent in a question asking who we should be cheering for: the Yanks or the Twins (which team is a bigger threat.) Sorry - I lost the question with a keystroke, but I remembered the context! I'm cheering for the Twins. It's against every fiber in my body to cheer for the Yankees. I know Santana would pose a difficult test, but I just can't cheer for the Yankees.

02:35PM
Tom, what does Remy really think of the ESPN announcers?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:35PM
I watched the game with the RemDawg yesterday. Let's just say we had a few laughs.
ForeheadOrHelipad?
02:35PM
Given the Angels injuries, and less than optimal rotation due to the A's series, do you see this thing going beyond 4?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:37PM
Great nickname -- I won't take it personally. I think you hit it on the head. With no Kennedy, no Guillen, and a questionable group of starters, the Angels should be beaten by the Sox. It would be huge to get it done in four, letting Schilling pitch Game 1 of the ALCS. BTW - whatever Guillen did must've been brutal. Kudos to Anaheim for sticking to their guns, but they may cost themselves post-season glory because of it.

02:37PM
Hey TC, any predictions for tonight? I'm pretty worried about Petey, I don't buy this business that he's still as confident as ever.
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:38PM
I'm not worried about Pedro, especially on six days of rest. This guy has always answered the call on the biggest stage (as long as you don't leave him in too long.) He knows his Red Sox legacy could well be at stake here... and he knows you don't get many chances to win a ring. As long as he gets through his buddy, Vladimir Guerrero, he should have a great night.

Glad to see Eck sharing the studio with you post-playoff game. Will he be there the whole time, or will it be "rotating analysts" as in the regular season?
NotYourTypicalForehe...
02:39PM
Tom, why didn't NESN show Schillings postgame press conference live? I caught it live on NECN while you guys were in commercial.
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:40PM
We'll be rotating the anaylsts. Sam Horn in studio with Jerry tonight - PRE-GAME at 9 pm. Back to post-game on Friday
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:40PM
I assume it's because we were in commercial. In that case, we try to play it back as soon as possible.

02:41PM
No post game tonight?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:42PM
No post-game tonight. Not that we weren't willing -- we're staying to watch the game, anyway -- but it was decided the meager ratings after 1 am didn't warrant a full post-game crew
NotYourTypicalForehe...
02:42PM
Tom, any early word on what time game 4 would be played. Considering the Sox and Angels would have to fly back to Cali for game 5, logic would dictate that it would have to be a 1 o'clock start. Does logic rule or does FOX?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:43PM
It has been my experience that logic has nothing to do with post-game scheduling -- witness last year's 10 pm Game 1 start and 4 pm Game 2 start. I would assume the game would be in the afternoon -- but my guess would be more like 4 pm. That's when Game 4 was a year ago... followed by Game 5 a day later on the West Coast.

Who's pitching Game 3 for the Sox? Do we know yet?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:45PM
At this point it's going to be Bronson Arroyo. On WEEI this morning, Terry Francona said Arroyo would "probably" go in Game 3 if he doesn't pitch tonight. He also said Arroyo would have pitched last night if Timlin didn't wrap things up so quickly. Obviously, Wakefield becomes the Game 3 starter if Arroyo doesn't go.

Are you jealous that Frede got a signature hand shake with Cabrera and you have not? Any chance you and Eck make a celebratory hand shake of your own?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:46PM
Tewks was on that night and we did one. We've got a long way to go to get anything close to Cabrera's rhythm.

02:46PM
If you and Remy shared a few laughs while listening to the ESPN announcers, I'd love to know your thoughts on Buck and McCarver.
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:46PM
I made that clear in my Boston.com mailbag last week. I listed 10 things I wanted to see in the ALDS, and "anyone but Tim McCarver calling Sox games" was on the list.
Boston_Bryan
02:47PM
Hey Tom - I was wondering what your thoughts were about BK Kim and his situation?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:48PM
BK has already been referred to as "Theo's Folly." My guess is the Sox will try hard to move him this off-season. If not, he'll be one of the most expensive seldom-used relief pitchers in the game next year.

02:48PM
Tom, Any word on Schilling's ankle?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:49PM
No, and I'm surprised there hasn't been more said about it. Everyone I've spoken with today is downplaying it, and expects him to be fine for his next start.
soxin3
02:49PM
Hey TC, would you have lifted Schilling earlier than the seventh inning last night? I would have taken him out in the fifth when the Sox had a hefty lead, saving him to possibly come back in Game 4. What are your thoughts?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:50PM
I suggested that during the game, and both Rem and Eck shot the idea down. I'll defer to them. The idea of Schilling coming back on three days rest at this point sounds great, but you'd only want to do it if you were facing elimination. In that case, you'd need to win Game 5 anyway, so why blow him out in Game 4?

02:51PM
when do you think we'll get to see doug mientkiewicz on a full time basis
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:51PM
In a word, no. What you saw yesterday - Millar starting and being relieved by Mientkiewicz in the late-middle innings - is what you'll see the rest of the way.

02:52PM
TC, Have you ever met Tim McCarver, and if so, will you tell him now much people in Boston hate him. Thanks,
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:53PM
I have met Tim McCarver. Actually a very nice man in person. I just can't stand watching him. I'm sure plenty of people feel the same about me.... BTW - Rodney Dangerfield was The Man! I'm renting Caddyshack this weekend to pay homage.

02:53PM
Could you ban Tewks' purple suit? It hurts my eyes.
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:54PM
That's his Easter Special. I promise I will NOT let him wear it in the post-season.

02:54PM
TC-- the ALDS Game 4 vs Oakland last year was a 1pm first pitch cause it started at the same time as the pats/titans game
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:55PM
Good point. I was so messed up on time zones and jet lags (traveling with the team) that I forgot. There's still no guarantee it'll be a 1 pm start this year, however.
TC for prez
02:56PM
Do you think the performances of Varitek, Pedro, and Cabrera in the post season will influence whether or not they re-sign with the Sox next year?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:58PM
I'm not so sure. I think they are all different cases. In the case of Varitek, it'll all come down to how much agent Scott Boras can get for him on the open market. I highly doubt the Sox will pay him $10 million a year. They will make Pedro an offer -- my guess is somewhere in the $12 to $13 million a year range, and if he finds that a "lack of respect" he'll be gone. Cabrera is most interesting. He loves it here, the fans love him here, but the Sox believe AA prospect Hanley Ramirez is the shortstop of the future. Will they be willing to time up three years' worth of salary for him, even though they think Ramirez is ready? That's the big question...
NotYourTypicalForehe...
02:58PM
Tom, if Mueller stays healthy, will Youkilis be dropped from the ALCS roster?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
02:59PM
It's a strong possibility, considering the team will probably want to go to 11 pitchers for a longer seven-game series.

I thought MLB.com released the times as being at 4:09, 10:09, 4:09, 1:09, and 4:09?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:02PM
No. Games 4 and 5 are still TBA. It all depends on how many other series are still going on.
adam
03:02PM
big question = why is nesn not showing playoffs? if one does not have espn, any other way of watching the games?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:03PM
Like other sports, baseball turns to the national networks for the post-season. If you're in Greater Boston and don't have ESPN, Channel 5 is airing the game. It all turns to Fox for the ALCS and beyond.

03:04PM
So when are we going to see Nixon take the field? Are there still worries about his injury(ies)?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:04PM
He'll be in the lineup tonight against the righty Colon. It appears they will be using Kapler against lefties and Nixon against righties.
TC for prez
03:05PM
When they go to 11 pitchers, will it be Williamson that's added? Why not keep Youk and send down McCarty?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:06PM
My guess is that it will be Williamson - according to Francona, Williamson was the last man out of the Division Series roster. McCarty isn't on the roster -- he didn't make the 25-man list. It would have to be Youkilis, or another reserve like Pokey Reese or Dave Roberts. Given those options, it seems like Youkilis is the most likely guy to go.

03:06PM
TC - We all know Lowe's history out of the bullpen, if there was a situation where he was used long term in a ball game and pitched well, would you picture him starting again in a 4 game series?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:07PM
Perhaps. He's had great success in the post-season as a reliever, however, so I doubt they are leaning towards moving him towards a starter. Arroyo or Wakefield would have to get roughed up for them to even consider returning Lowe to the starters position.

03:08PM
Hey TC, I've got "Standing Room Only" tickets....what's the best to stand for game 3?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:09PM
Behind Section 27 (or thereabouts) high above third base. There's a concession stand nearby (including a beer stand), a restroom right behind you, and it's one of the last spots to fill up during a game.

03:09PM
Assuming that we win and the twinkies defeat the evil empire....any chance Tito would flip the rotation to give Wake a start in game 2? Didn't I read somewhere that Wake pitches better in domes?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:10PM
He does, but it's hard to take Schilling or Pedro out of one of those games. If this series goes five, however, you might not have a choice.

03:10PM
Hi Tom, How does the rest of the team feel about Damon's comments about them being a bunch of idiots?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:11PM
Knowing these guys, they probably laughed their butts off. I've said it before, I'll say it again -- the Red Sox are Delta House, and you can't say anything outrageous enough concerning them.
WeNeedTek
03:12PM
Tom, At what point will we know the game times for games 4 & 5, if necessary?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:12PM
It came down pretty late last year. We might not know 'til Friday.
TC for prez
03:13PM
Would Sunday night not be a night game because Monday would be a travel game?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:13PM
As I recall (an, if you've been reading, you know I'm a little foggy on the recollection) last year's game was 5 pm West Coast time, 8 pm East Coast time. Evening, but not leaving a whole lot of time for travel.
TC for prez
03:14PM
How come no role for D.O. in the post season shows?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:15PM
The Dynamic One will be with us in studio tomorrow night for the debut of "Sox Talk Live" from 8-10. We'll be doing it on off days during post-season series. We'll have interviews and will take you calls.
adam
03:15PM
not really. am new to boston, but talk is that this is the strongest team in a while and our best chance in a while. you agree?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:16PM
Yes. 98 wins is the most since 1978 -- and the 5th most in the 103 year history of the franchise. They've got plenty of offense and premier pitching. This team has as good a chance as anyone to win it all.
NotYourTypicalForehe...
03:17PM
Tom, Gordon Edes made of point of saying how disrespectful the Red Sox players were to little Nelson de la Rosa. Did you see any of the clubhouse antics, and were they just good natured Delta House style fun or were they really mean spirited?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:17PM
I was pinned down in studio for pre- and post-game, so I didn't witness it myself. I heard it was tasteless, but I hadn't heard that it was disrespectful.

TC....I say Pedro and Derek can take off next season for all I care, but Theo had BETTER NOT LET VARITEK get away.

I think you speak for a lot of Sox fans. Again, as usual, it all comes down to the Benjamins.

03:20PM
Could you make any kind of bet with Eck, resulting in him losing and needing to cut his hair and shave his 'stache?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:21PM
I suggested him trimming/shaving when Johnny Damon did his shave for charity thing this summer. Let's just say there was no chance.

hey tom, does anyone from NESN pay attention red sox fansites and bulletin boards to get a sense of what people think?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:23PM
I can't tell you what NESN does as an entity... but I check the fansites nearly daily to try and get a "pulse of The Nation." In other words -- I DO read what you all say... including the stuff about me!

Will there be more rallies at Fenway prior to the ALCS?
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:26PM
I doubt it. Monday night's event was an MLB event, coordinated with all eight teams heading to the post-season. There were rallies in every park. It was pretty cool... and maybe MLB is looking to do it again. Haven't heard anything about it, though.

Can you give us your predictions for the playoffs? world series etc...
Tom Caron (Moderator, Moderator)
03:30PM
I like the Sox in this series, and I still think the Yankees win the other ALDS. I'll take the Sox over the Yankees in 7. In the NL, I'll take the Cardinals and the Astros, with St. Louis advancing to the World Series. The Sox take the Cards in 7 games. Thanks for joining me in the chat room. Maybe we can do it again before the World Series. In the meantime, take a power nap and get ready for Pedro vs. Colon tonight!
