Hey, everyone....Hope you all left some time for a little nap this afternoon because it's going to be a late night tonight. Let's start our little session now
bill lee
12:01PM
hey gordon shouldnt arroyo be pitching tonight and pedro on friday because of the home/away numbers make more sense
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:03PM
BL, Nah, that's putting too much emphasis on the numbers. You go with tried and true, and Pedro has October history--not to mention a 9-1 record against the Angels. Arroyo's numbers haven't been as good at home, granted, but the Sox are a big home-parl team, and let Bronson benefit from all that love
Mr. Marcaine
12:03PM
So what is the status on Schilling's ankle? Seemed Francona and Schill downplayed the injury, but the fact it was x-rayed can't be good
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:04PM
The x-rays were negative, Marcaine, so I think everything is OK. A tweak, nothing more

12:04PM
Gordon, Unfortunately, Im a HUGE Sawx fan stuck in NY (due to employment) and I dont get to read your articles as I once did while living in good ol' Billerica...Would you say that this current Sawx team resembles more of the "team" that Theo is trying to assemble as opposed to the Sawx team that made it to the playoffs last year?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:07PM
This year's team isn't much differentlt from last year's offensively. The big difference is Schilling giving the club two aces, a much deeper bench that allows the Sox to play better defense and manufacture some runs when needed, and a bullpen whose relievers have known their roles all season. And hey, it doesn't matter if you're in the Apple, all it takes is a modem to read me and everybody else in the Globe!

12:07PM
Hey gordo; your comments about pedro seem to have taken on a more fiery, and dare i say, shaughnessy esque tone in recent weeks. what's up? did pedro piss you off?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:10PM
MML, shoot, I thought my column today was tilted heavily toward Pedro. I went so far as to predict he's going to pitch a great game tonight. I don't think i've strayed into the personal with pedro; I was astounded, and remain so, at how extreme his frustration was after the yankee game, but agree with him that it hardly means he intends to run up the white flag the next time he sees the Bombers. I have pointed out how his performance has declined. He hasn't ticked me off at all, although I wasn't a fan of him bringing the 29-inch man into the clubhouse. That struck me as Fellini-esque
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:11PM
I can tell you I talked with him quite a while after yesterday's game and he does feel like the media--and i don't think he exempted me--have turned against him. But he has often used slights, real and imagined, to pump himself up
johndoyle
12:12PM
Gordon, love your work. Now come on. I know the company line is "one game at a time" and "we're only thinking about the Angels" blah blah blah. But these guys HAVE to be thinking, 10 more wins, 10 more wins, to erase an 86-year-old curse? C'mon, you can tell me!
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:13PM
No, I don't think these guys think that way. They may be thinking two more wins, in order to get past the Angels, but really, that's probably a stretch, too. It's a cliche, yes, but sometimes there's some truth there. The focus is on the game tonight
Who's High Pitch?
12:13PM
Gordon, who do you expect to see come out of the bullpen tonight for the Sox now that Timlin went 2 inning yesterday. Can we expect to see Lowe if Pedro struggles?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:14PM
I see Foulke in line to have a two-inning save. But absolutely, they'll turn to Lowe, and possibly even Arroyo, if Pedro stumbles

12:14PM
Gordo, Love your work. How's Pedro's mood. Is he fia'd up!
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:16PM
TCP, I talked to Pedro for 20 minutes to a half hour after yesterday's game. He's mad at the world right now, especially the media, which he thinks have tried to make it look like he and Schilling are at odds. I think he's going to come up big
Pituitaryonthepine
12:17PM
Hi Gordo, What's the deal with Petey's stand-off behavior and no-show during game introductions? Is it fair to say that if he tanks tonight that the Sox will be looking for a new number #2 starter during the off season?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:19PM
Here's what happened on the intros, from what I know. Pedro came flying down the runway from the clubhouse and got there just as they were announcing, No. 49, Tim Wakefield...'' Obviously, there was no excuse for being late, but as one who has a history of being a bit on the tardy side myself--just ask my editors--I'd be a hypocrite for hammering him too much on that one. The press conference, thing, that's him feeling he's been unfairly maligned during his slump, plus a distaste for talking about not pitching well
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:20PM
hey folks, chill on some of the handles you're using, please. they won't get posted if they register too high on my disgust meter
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:22PM
OK, someone just asked me a question about why beat writers don't cover all the games, since we only work a few months a year. Puzzling, the questioner says, but his handle ain't going to pass here. I'll answer, thoiugh
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:24PM
Baseball season runs, as we all know, from February to Halloween. I go to spring training beginning of Feb (not a complaint, believe me). But i would think it's pretty obvious from reading the papers that our coverage doesn't end with the games. In many ways, especially in boston, the off-season is even busier. Last year, I made nine trips in the off-season, for schilling stuff, winter meetings, a-rod stuff, etc. That's why we don't go on every trip, or cover every game. It's a pretty good marathon, and a rest now and then isn't a bad thing.

12:25PM
do you think that evil scott boras will blackmail the sox into taking lowe back by using varitek as the bait? and if tek demands too much, are the sox prepared to walk away? paul lo duca also has great leadership and skills and would be cheaper. not sure if he's a free agent, but if he is that could be the leverage we need to get tek back at a fair price.

12:26PM
Gordo, I'm debating with all my friends, as awesome as it was to see the Twins beat the Yanks, in the Bronx; shouldn't we be rooting for the Yanks, so we can play them and get some payback from last year? If the Sox win the World Series, don't we want to see them beat the Yanks?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:28PM
i don't think there is any circumstance in which Sox fans would feel very happy to root for the yanks. I don't think you have to beatr the yanks in order to validate winning a world series. That makes you the best, regardless of whether you had to get through pinstrtipes. having said that, though, i think it makes a better story if the yanks and sox meet in the LCS
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:31PM
Theo, no, Boras won't make lowe and varitek a package deal. The players wouldn't stand for that, and that's not how he does business. I don't think Lo Duca is a free agent..i'd have to double-check, but i doubt it very much. Sox don't want to part with Varitek..i think they'll find a way to make it work

If Leskanic and or Lowe can't get 6 to 9 outs in an 8-1 or 8-3 game, why are they on the postseason roster?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:33PM
I really don't think that was the issue. If Francona had thought there was any risk at all with Schilling's ankle, he'd have been out
Z man
12:33PM
Hi, Gordon. I really appreciate your work. Quick question: What's your prediction for tonight? How do you think both Pedro and Colon will fare? And do you think Trot Nixon will start in right in place of Gabe Kapler?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:33PM
question
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:35PM
Z man, I think it will be a low-scoring game in which both Pedro and Colon will pitch well. Sox will try to wear Colon out like they did twice this season, when he threw over 100 pitches in l;ess than 5 innings. Trot is definitely starting in right. Never a doubt
Bones
12:35PM
Gordo, did sheffield just confirm to everyone what we all knew already? That Bonds is quite poissibly the a-hole in all of sports? From his comments on Boston, to his comments on why Clemens didn't have to travel with the team on trips where he wasn't starting (cause he's white), isn't it pretty much fact that this guy plays for personal goals and reasons and that's why he's the center of the steroid contraversy compared to someone like Giambi or Sheffield?
Lou
12:35PM
Do Glaus and Guererro scare you as much as they scare me?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:37PM
Bones, the Sheffield piece--and i urge people to go on the cnnsi.com site and check it out--described a world pretty foreign from the rest of us, doesn't it. The world of the rich and famous and spoiled is not a pretty sight, and Bonds comes off terribly and in some ways Sheff doesn't come out looking so good, either
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:38PM
Liu, Glaus was World Serries MVP, right? And guerrero is going to be the AL's MVP and had a nine-RBI game ahainst the Sox this summer. So you should be scared. Me, my phobias revolve more around snakes and gators. Too much spring training, I guess
Robo
12:38PM
Will Millar start every game at first during the playoffs?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:39PM
Robo, it appears that way. Francona said he plans to be pretty consistent in his approach, which means millar starts, doug m. in as defensive replacement. That changes, of course, in NL park during World Series, when Ortiz will play, at least against righties
chubs colon
12:40PM
Gordon - Love the column. Not to pile on Tito, but what was Mike Timlin doing pitching two innings in a blowout yesterday? It seems like he's having trouble pitching back-to-back already so why not get him out after the eight and see if Leskanic can throw a strike in the playoffs?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:41PM
Chubs, I think Francona's thinking was you donmm't take a risk if you don't have to. He'll have Foulke for two innings today, Timlin if absolutely needed, especially with a day off tomorrow.
10more
12:43PM
Gordon, great job as always. I met you last year outside Fenway after the Sunday night Springsteen concert at the hot dog stand, and it was an honor. My question is, which of the Sox are Colon-killers? Also, who does Colon historically pitch well against on the Sox roster?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:44PM
10More, and what an all-time night that show was, no? Damon is hitting .375 against Colon, with a couple of home runs. Manny is hitting .350, Doug M. .333, and Millar has two home runs. Trot has 3 HR,s but a .188 average. Colon is tough on Mueller (.091) and Ortiz (4 for 32). dave Roberts has a .455 average against bartolo

12:45PM
Gordon - do we know anything about how gimpy Guerrero and Anderson are for the Angels? I saw both of them make some pretty bad swings at the plate yesterday and am just wondering if they are really ailing.
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:45PM
Anderson is hurting pretty badly, has been all season, He's got back and knee problems that have hampered him greatlyt., Vladi, from what I know, is fine
idiot
12:46PM
Hi Mr. Edes. Early in the year I remember that there was talk of trading Damon and getting his contract off the books. Given his great year, do you think the Sox brass will be interested in extending him now?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:47PM
i think that's an intriguing question. I haven't posed it to theo yet, but with Damon going into his contract year, and his vaklue probably never higher, it's one that will attract some talk, I'm sure. Hey, theo traded Nomar--no one is immune

12:47PM
Hey Gordon, does this goofy game schedule, 1:00 yesterday, 7:00 today, 4:00 on Friday (built around ensuring New York games are Prime Time), distress the team at all? When are the flights back from the West Coast and because of that should we get the later start on Friday? Isn't it a little unfair? Thanks!
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:49PM
believe me, no one but the networks is happy about the schedule. The teams will fly back after the game tonight, so i dont think it matters if it's 4 or 7 on friday. the killer, as it was with oakland, is if there is a game 5 sunday, which means little rest for any of the parties involved
MM
12:49PM
Has Francona indicated who he will use to start Friday? If not, what is your feel for who and under what circumstances?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:50PM
MM, Francona is trying mightily not to tip his hand, but since wake threw on the side yesterday and arroyo was in the pen, i'm guessing Wakefield on Friday.
DirtBagPontiff
12:51PM
Hey Gordon, Ortiz has some abysmall numbers against Bartolo Colon. Do you think he'll start at DH tonight?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:52PM
I think Ortiz starts despite the 4 for 32. That's when you go with the player, and not the numbers
memphisredsox
12:53PM
Do you agree with Francona's decision to not ever start Trot against left handed pitchers? The guy's so clutch, I'm afraid there may be nights it will hurt to not have him in there.
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:54PM
I think that's more a function of trot missing so much time during the season, and kaplere playing so well (.320, i believe) against lefties

Hey Gordo, love the chat. Will Mahow Mahow become the Sox version of the Rally Monkey? And why dont they bring back Karaoke Rally Guy?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:57PM
Gosh, I hope not. That would be in terrible taste (Mahow Mahow, not the Karoake Guy). The humor directed at the tiny man was pretty rough, trust me. As for Karoake Guy, a great shtick last year, but do we really want to see KM dance again?
E-inyankeecountry
12:57PM
Are people forgetting that this is Pedro freaking Martinez? He finally feels 100% about his shoulder for the first time in 3 years. Angels will be lucky to get a run or 2...What do you think Gordo?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:58PM
i think that's a very distinct possibility. biut don't sell the angels short., they're a very resilient team, and pedro cpould pitch great and still make one or two mistakes and lose
LuisTiant
12:58PM
Gordo, i could have sworn Bill Mueller hit a homerun off Colon last game at Fenway. He did ...I looked it up.
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
12:59PM
Looie, right you are. Mueller is hitting .091 against Colon (1 dfor 11), but the one hit was an HR. That's why Ortiz will play tonight, despite the 4 for 32
romine16
12:59PM
Did Scott Williamson really offer out of the playoffs with Tito and Theo? If so, is that tremendous honesty or does it lend some credo to Grady not trusting him in game 7 last year?
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
01:01PM
Romine, thatr's the version we fgot from Francona. I don't know if anyone has talked to Williamson--I haven't--but it should have been as plain to him as those watching that he wasn't close to the piutcher he was before getting hurt. He was healthier lkast October, but I still believe Grady had some reservations babout using Williamson in the ninth last season
man in the moon
01:02PM
Gordon...Just like to say that your past treament of some players has been a little harsh and borderline cruel(see Carl Everett)...Having said that I am glad that you are taking the positive approach with Pedro....Question-Do you thing Pedro will mix his curve and change-up early, instead of coming out and throwing 88m.p.h. fastballs???
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
01:04PM
Carl Everett? That's reaching back a ways. Yeah, poor misunderstood Carl. He really earned his money this year for the White Sox, didn't he, which is why Ozzie Guillen said he'd better show up in shape next spring or else. Anyway, I wouldn't pretend to guess what Pedro's approach will be tonihght, other than to say i suspect he'll have it cranked up more than usual from the git-go. Too many other factors involved for me to speculate otherwise, and he didn't share with me his plan
Frank
01:05PM
Gordon ... love your work. Did you notice on the 26th ( last Yankee game) that twice Arod baited fans by pretending to throw ball he caught for 3rd out into stands and didn't ... once even shaking his head no? Then he and the captain broke protocol when they exited the dugout to congratulate rookie when he hit his first homer. Then they walking smugly back to dugout while first walking all along the top step? classless ... inviting trouble with fans ...
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
01:06PM
we coulkd tell there was some commotion, but wasn't sure what was happening. that's a little bush, if true, but if the stories derek and alex have told me about what fenway fans say to them, it obviosuly gets pretty ugly down there
Dave W
01:07PM
Hi Gordon, I'm curious about the bunt last night...do you know if that was called by Francona or did Mientkiewicz do that on his own? I thought it was a GREAT move...even if it doesn't work out, they had a big lead and it puts the thought in the Angels' heads that the Sox might do it again...kind of like stretching the defense out in football by throwing downfield a couple times early in a game. Thanks, Dave
Gordon Edes (Moderator)
01:07PM
Mientkiewicz, on his own all the way. I agree with you, a great move., Mientkiewicz had just told me saturday that he averages about 10 bunt hits a year. that was a beauty
Gordon Edes (Moderator)

Hey, everyone, thanks for your time. Enjoy the game tonight, and we'll do it all again next week
